hi there welcome back to sunday school, online, so this week we are going to, look at jesus in the temple and, this is where jesus gets upset at what's, happening in the temple, and he cleanses it now, we have to understand what's going on in, the temple first, so i'll have a couple of pictures to, share with you as we're going along, that will pop up so what's happening in, the temple, is that um people would come from, all over three times a year to make, sacrifices on special days, and they would need to bring, animals or have animals to sacrifice, based on old testament laws and, practices, and worshiping god and these animals, couldn't just be, any old animal they had to be, perfect they had to be without, uh blemish or without, [Music], um, without things that would make them not, be, perfect so while, people would travel from maybe a hundred, miles away, to make their sacrifices at the temple, they might not want to bring a sheep, or another animal from home because on, the way, it might get hurt and if it gets, hurt like if it ran, into something or stepped in a hole and, hurt its leg, or was attacked by wild animals, it would not be good enough for the, sacrifice, and so many people would travel to, jerusalem, and they would purchase their animals, for sacrifice there, now they couldn't just use any old money, to buy these animals, so they had to change out their money, for what was known as money, specifically for the temple or the, temple tax, and so when they changed out their money, to buy this special money, they would then use it for the tax that, they needed to pay at the temple, and or to buy their animals for, sacrifice, now jerusalem was a pretty big place and, here's a picture of what jerusalem, looked like, all right and that area that is circled, is where the temple was at so you had to, go, through the city to get to the temple at, the temple, over time the sale of these, animals for sacrifice and the money, changers, the people helping, people change out their money, with uh images on it that, didn't weren't um, representative of god uh they would, change out that money, uh for the special money and it started, out, being outside of the, entrance to the whole, area itself and, that was a distraction but over time, it moved in to, what is called the gentile court, so here's a picture, so the temple was a really big place, and the gentile court was where, non-jewish people, would be able to pray and, worship god and offer sacrifices there, were different, uh parts of the temple we see in the, picture there was, a special place for women and then we, also see that there's uh, other places one is the holiest of, holies where only the high priest could, go in, on um only certain days of the year, special days, of the year otherwise uh, it was not done it was not being, respectful to god, so we have these animals being, sold and money changing, happening in the gentile part of the, temple, and what was happening was that this is, really loud, and it's basically turned into a market, place, it would be like if we came to church, and they weren't selling anything, in the sanctuary but they were loud, enough, and as soon as we walked outside there, were people selling all sorts of things, in the fellowship hall and in the, narthex on a sunday morning, and it was happening while people were, trying, to study god's word as well so it would, be happening during sunday school too, so all this stuff is going on and if we, flip to our gospel reading and john will, see, what jesus does we're in john, chapter 2 verses 13, and following all right, so it says the passover of the jews was, at hand and jesus went up to jerusalem, in the temple he found those who were, selling oxen, and sheep and pigeons and the money, changers were sitting there, and jesus was not happy with this, so to make a point he made up a whip of, cords and he drove them all, out of the temple with the sheep and, oxen, so he shooed out, the money changers and the oxen and the, sheep and the people selling, the oxen in the sheep and he poured, out the coins of the money changers and, flipped over their tables and he told, those who sold pigeons, take these things away do not make my, father's house, a house of trade, and so the jews then said to him, what sign do you show us for doing these, things so the jewish, priests were not happy with what jesus, was doing because they were making money, off of this whole thing, and it'd become a business, instead of it focusing on what, the sacrifices were meant to be for, which was to honor and worship god and, for forgiveness, and so they want to know on what, authority jesus, has to throw these people out and jesus, answered them destroy this temple and in, three days i will raise it up, and the jews thought it was crazy, because he said it has taken 46 years to, build this temple, yet you will destroy it in three days, but that's not what jesus was talking, about yes jesus was, upset at what was happening in the, temple, and there were all these distractions, that were taking people, away from the purpose, or the real meaning for having a temple, to god and they were drawing and, distracting and being loud and taking, away the opportunity for people to come, and worship god, he was angry about that but when he said, that i, will raise this temple in three days or, destroy it and, build it again in three days he was, talking about what he would do when he, went to calvary when he would, suffer and die for our sins on the cross, and then he would be buried and then, after how many days did he rise again, he rose after three days and that was to, save, us so that we don't have to make, animal sacrifices anymore in the temple, his sacrifice is everlasting and so, jesus when he cleared out the temple, did it to tell, others off because he was upset and, angry at them for what they were doing, for driving people away from god but he, also told the jewish people the reason, for, why he was here which was to save us, and all people from their sins, and make us in a good and right, relationship with god again, all right so as we reflect on this, story and jesus cleansing the temple, during the time of lent, we also reflect on god and, cleansing or getting rid of the sin in, our, lives so, that's our story for
