[Music], hey it's me now a lot of people in the, art community were taking coloring books, and coloring them as the proficient, artist that they are professional, artists coloring in a coloring book and, it's like woo i didn't jump on this, trend because i'm very uncomfortable, with calling myself a professional, artist when my art looks like this and, that and that which is fine i'm not, trying to put myself down art doesn't, have to be outstanding to be fun i know, for a lot of people who have like the, really amazing art skills they can turn, a coloring book page into a masterpiece, i feel like if i colored a coloring book, page it would just look like i colored a, coloring book page you know so i'm kind, of doing my own thing here of course of, course i just can never do the thing the, way you're supposed to do it i did used, to really love coloring books in fact i, have brought some of my old coloring, books in here for evidence i don't know, why i need evidence not like it's an, outrageous claim what it can't be not, that shocking uh we've got little's pet, shop we've got lisa frank disney and, strawberry shortcake i colored in i, think all of these, nope didn't color in that one there's, one colored didn't color in that okay, maybe i didn't love coloring books, colored that while the uh coloring book, challenge would be a great opportunity, to put these old coloring books to use, that have been on my shelf for 10 years, i'm gonna just step away from them i'm, still not going to use that so what i'm, going to do instead is i'm going to draw, my own coloring page and then i'm gonna, print it out and then i'm gonna color it, so this video really isn't all that, related to the trend when i thought of, this idea though for some reason i just, got really excited about it because it's, combining digital art and traditional, art and i get to have full control over, what my coloring page looks like and, also don't have the pressure of really, transforming something into a beautiful, piece of art because it's like okay it's, my original art so we we're just not, gonna take that lens on it let's move, into phase one where i actually start, creating my coloring page, i said let's move let's move go okay and, here's my little area my creative area, ew scratch that wait no don't scratch, anything okay uh hi i'm gonna start my, design and whoa there's a lot happening, already it's a little too intense it's, too much too soon let's take a step back, just pay no attention to the sketch, that's already on the canvas i uh got a, little over eager but don't worry about, it remember these they are the sky bears, i painted these chip clips in a recent, dollar store makeover video and i'm sure, you can't have forgotten them already, unless you skipped that week, i'm not gonna name any names you know, who you are but today i'll be taking, these characters to the next stage, beyond mere existence into, enlightenment, i don't know what i'm talking about i, think i've done too many voiceovers in, my time on this planet earth earth is, the one i'm on i think now there's, cloudy bear he's got his head in the, clouds he's actually just really tired, then there's rainbow bear she's sweet, and sunbear who's a literal ball of, energy and it's kind of a lot as a group, they make the sky bears now for today's, project i thought a lot about what i, wanted to do for my fantabulous coloring, book experience you see me trying to, hype this thing up i decided on bringing, the sky bears back because one i didn't, feel like i got to explore these, characters to the fullest i mean their, heads which is great it's very important, part of the body but i feel like the sky, bears you know they just hadn't reached, their fullest potential also you may, notice that a fourth bear has been born, right there in front of you ew, introducing rain bear he's sad he's so, sad he cries the tears of the entire, world poor rain bear it kind of sounds, like i'm saying rainbow with an, australian accent what reindeer no, currently struggling with his legs i, don't know why i'm failing to comprehend, what legs look like this is one of the, problems that comes from drawing from, your imagination your imagination is, whack and i'm using a big rainbow to, frame all the characters in then i spent, a lot of time fussing over stuff, changing things until i'm ready to do, the final outline i was quite happy to, be doing this outline digitally i, actually hate outlining with traditional, art supplies getting the fine line or, the micron pens, but doing it this way is so much better, because when you're using digital art, you can so much easier remove things, move things redo things as much as you, want but with that amount of flexibility, i had feelings i just feel like this, outline needs to be perfect it's never, permanently done it can always be fixed, can always just move something or change, something there's no excuse for a single, mistake here it has to be fantastic then, i realized you know it's probably best, that i don't get too carried away with, the details of the outline because i, really want to give myself plenty of, freedom in the coloring i don't want to, box myself in so i decided you know what, no i'm just going to keep the line art, really simple yes it's going to look, dumb but that way i can add the details, in when i actually go to color and, that's how i'll bring it to life and, here's the point where i obsess over, each individual pixel go ahead and erase, that pixel girl, i decided to give the rain bear's paw a, nice little appearance so that you know, he's holding onto that cloud doesn't, seem very safe or stable maybe not a, good idea but that's how he's doing and, some other things you know fixing up, doing it whatever once i got everything, the way i wanted i did a test print on, just regular old computer paper, surprisingly it looks pretty good well, you may think it looks like trash that's, rude i did notice some little micro, details that i wanted to fix up before, moving to the final print but after i've, gotten my full fix of obsession it's, time, i already know what sound effect i'm, going to put there i've printed the, final print and let's take a quick break, because this video is sponsored by, diamond art club if you've never heard, of diamond painting ah i have a kit, right here i have here the rainbow rose, kit i feel like it's gonna be easiest to, explain how this works by just showing, you many stuffs in here so it comes with, the canvas and all of the diamonds so, many little shinies 72 000 to be exact, diamond painting is a newer craft hobby, a lot like paint by number using shiny, rhinestones it's like paint by number, with a glow up the kids come with, everything you need to create a full, diamond painting of course the canvas, all the rhinestones all the tools that, you need and it's actually very simple, to use you just take the canvas peel, back the film it's a huge grid with all, kinds of different symbols that match, with each different color of a diamond, so using this little magic applicator, pen you dip it into the wax which allows, you to pick up the diamonds and then, simply stick them onto the canvas and, the process can be really relaxing and a, great way to unwind this is how the, final result will look it's so, satisfying to look at i can't wait to, hang it up in my studio if you would, like to try painting with diamonds check, the link in the description use code, mariah to get 25 off for new customers, and again thank you to diamond art club, for sponsoring this video and sending me, this amazing kit so with my final print, i used some kind of fancy paper i tested, a few different types of paper that were, fancy and this was the one that i liked, i'm not normally much of a paper snob i, mean i use computer paper on the reg but, i kind of wanted to do something nice, today and now is the epic moment, i'm really trying to inject drama into, this i'm overcompensating for the fact, that this isn't that exciting this is, where i switch out the ipad for the, paper switching between worlds traveling, dimensions i'm an art dimension traveler, no no i'm gonna get rid of these because, things may get a little messy here and, boom, it's a brand new set of watercolor, pencils i've always been intrigued by, watercolor pencils but after my last, horrible experience with trying to use, some of those nasty discount watercolor, pencils um it just about made me lose it, okay but i've upgraded to these new, pencils that are supposed to be much, nicer quality i guess we'll find out, today so i actually started testing some, of the colors on the test print double, test and i was gonna like you know take, the time to plan everything out i was, gonna be a good artist for once but then, i got bored and i'm like enough planning, i just want to art so getting into it a, big part of my reason for getting fancy, with the paper is that i wanted, something that was going to hold up, nicely with the watercolor and not get, all, like what paper do now i've actually, never looked into how to properly use, watercolor pencils might have been a, good idea before i use them in front of, potentially millions of people they are, very appealing to me because i love, using colored pencils and i love using, watercolor however using pencils on, large areas can be rather painful, watercolor is less painful but it's also, kind of difficult to control if you've, ever met water before it's all over the, place okay just likes to go everywhere, and drip and run, now that i've laid down a light layer of, pencil i'm just using a wet brush to, activate it and melt that color i don't, know i said that like i'm on a game show, i did like this process however it was, not perfect it worked great for some, colors while others really faded away, the blue in particular he just left us, he's like got a drink and i'm out of, here he was rude so i did have to go, back over all of it again to darken up, certain colors and it just was like a, little bit uneven and inconsistent but, it wasn't bad enough to change or start, over i did just continue with the same, process for the rest of the entire, rainbow and then we come to rain bear, the reason i added rain bear into the, group is mainly because the color, combination of pink orange and gray is, odd to me it's odd i don't love it i, didn't really choose it i had to go with, it because that was the color of the, chip clips so i want to add another, color to put in there does adding blue, to this color scheme really help out i, feel like maybe green or teal but i went, with this rainy blue and if you notice, something different about the sadness of, rain bear you're absolutely correct this, is no ordinary sadness this is not my, hat's on too tight not to dismiss you, grumpy cat your feelings are real but, rain bear feels the weight of the, world's sadness if you've ever felt sad, rain bear cried a tear for you so the, next time you feel sad double it because, you're not only sad but you're making, rain bear cry so feel guilty about that, it's not just rain bear who feels things, okay all the sky bears exist in the most, intense form of emotion cloudy bear is, not just tired he's exhausted in fact, it's rare to see him awake maybe a, couple times a year he opens his eyes, sunbear has this amount of bright energy, that's enough to scare you rainbow bear, is so painfully sweet she never says, anything negative it's so sweet it's, disgusting now i'm just finishing up, with the first layer of the art which is, the watercolor pencil that did work out, pretty well just to cover some ground, but it's definitely not looking nice the, next phase i'm gonna move on from the, watercolors and go in with my regular, colored pencils this is where i'm gonna, really try to brighten up some areas, bring in some shadows highlights, contrast dimension all the art words and, this is where i started to really have a, lot of fun with this coloring page like, i said i did enjoy coloring books at one, point in my life i did step away from, them pretty quickly mainly because for, me a big part of the fun with art is, coming up with the ideas you know i like, to create new characters and come up, with like stupid little stories that you, have to hear, and with coloring books the idea is, already worked out for you which for a, lot of people that's the appeal for me i, like to do my own thing you know i don't, like to be told what to do this was a, lot more fun for me personally because i, did kind of get the coloring book, experience but i also got to create my, own idea as well and speaking of my, ideas these are the sky bears right um, right but notice they're all daytime sky, bears what if there was a completely new, set of sky bears that rule the skies at, night, maybe one day i'll design the night sky, bears if you would like to see that if, not i mean let's be real i'll probably, do it anyway let me tell you i really, tried with this coloring okay i tried i, know it may not be the best remember, this okay this is what i come from but i, wanted it to look like the sun is, casting a bright yellow light on one, side of everything and then there's like, a bluish purple shadow of sadness that, is coming from rain bear and it's, creeping on the other side uh kind of, bummed that we didn't get to see rainbow, bears body not to sound creepy i mean, she does have a paw now which is great, love the paw but she's pretty much still, existing as a head um and that's, nobody's fault but my own because i drew, her like that but i didn't really, consider that i'd be robbing everyone of, the experience of seeing what the rest, of her design looks like i'm sad about, it oh my gosh i'm making rain bear cry, stop i'm sorry i'm not sad with the, coloring i really just kept on building, and layering really trying to get a nice, dynamic feel to it i wasn't going for, realism clearly but i am trying to like, get some dimension you know like make it, alive eventually i did get to a place, where i'm pretty happy with it and just, adding some last details and here is the, final piece i think this came out pretty, cool you can definitely see the texture, of the paper coming through i try to, like blend and cover over that i have, mixed feelings about it don't know if i, like it other than that i think it looks, pretty good i love the light of the sun, and how that looks in the rest of the, piece i'm so happy to have brought the, sky bears back and brought them more to, life than they were before i loved the, experience of this and being able to, combine digital and traditional art into, one project it was really fun and cool i, hope you guys like this thank you so, much for watching and i'll see you next, week bye

Ask HN: First Client IssuesI am a hiding my name because this is my first client and I don't want people to go looking for my company (though that might be great advertising).

I've got a client that I know through multiple relationship maps (former co-worker of my wife and sibling of a friend of a friend) and while I was not a friend of the sibling, I was an acquaintance.

Client has a cousin doing her Graphical Design but the GD doesn't have any web experience. GD sent over three PDFs, one of all the products, one of the website, and one of the website specs. The website specs did not contain sizing information for the images or the pages, it contained font/spacing/coloring/page flow information.

I asked the GD for the sizing of the web page and was provided an answer. There was some functionality in the site design which I discussed with the client and removed (GD was inaccessible) based on an agreement.

I finished the site and client reviewed making a few changes. Did a second review and then sent the link to the GD for their review. GD commented on the proportions being off and the distortion of some images. I agreed that the dimensions were off, but that's what I was told to go with and if the measurements I have are not right, I need to know what they should be.

I reached out to the GD via phone and e-mail. Did not hear back until I received an e-mail from the client to both of us.

Basically the e-mail's tone was that of threatening if I couldn't finish the project client would find someone who could and that if the GD can't get me the information than the Client doens't know what I'll need. And yadda yadda yadda.

So the question is:
Do I suck it up and make the changes or do I just write this off as a learning experience?

Thanks. I appreciate it.

Long time lurker...
,Ask HN: Please review my photos to coloring pages startupReallyColor.com officially launched about a month ago (end of Sep 2013) and is being bootstrapped by one of my partners and I. Our tech lets you convert your images into printable coloring book pages. Our primary target is parents (mostly moms) and people who are interested in turning themselves into sketches.

We are noticing a large amount of initial interest in the idea itself, and have seen some initial traction and traffic on our site, but our repeat visitors so far are barely over 10%. Our audience is also more international than expected. We have not built a mobile app yet, but that will be a project soon.

I would love feedback on:

1) Our membership pricing/offerings and what you think about how we tell the user about it.

2) Whether a monthly premium membership would be better than an annual one. Keep in mind our international audience.

3) Other revenue generating ideas (other than advertising).

4) The general user experience (both creating the free coloring page and as a free member).

5) How a mobile app could play into this given that the coloring pages are printable (via PDFs).

Any other thoughts and feedback are also welcome. Thank you!.
,Show HN: A coloring book of data structures and algorithmsI'm making a coloring book of data structures and algorithms for programmers and students. So far I have a prototype page for a sorting algorithm (albeit a rather simple one).

Here the Selection Sort coloring pages you can print.
https://coderscoloringbook.com/selectionsort

And here is how I colored mine.
https://coderscoloringbook.com/selectionsortcolored

A coloring book is not quite enough to teach algorithms on its own, but I really get a lot from visual reinforcement of what I learn from books/lectures.

Do you think having coloring pages like this could be a helpful addition to the usual studying approach of textbooks, lectures and online coding practice?

Or is it just a fun little break from coding without too much educational value?.
,Show HN: Circumflex, browse HN in your terminalSome two years ago, I found myself spending a lot of time in the terminal between learning vim and discovering new command line tools. I was surprised to see that the niche of HN clis was (relatively) small, and so I decided to write my own command line tool for browsing HN called `circumflex`(`clx`).

`clx` is written in Go using Bubble Tea[1]. You can read the comment section or the linked article in reader mode in the pager `less`.

Using `lesskey` to add custom keybindings, the replies can be collapsed and expanded in real-time (but not individual replies, only all replies at once). Behind the scenes I am appending invisible unicode characters to each line so that I can use the custom keybindings to filter them out. The same technique is used to allow for jumping between top-level comments.

I spent a lot of time thinking about syntax highlighting and finding relevant bits to highlight while also not going overboard with colors. The end result is highlighting of things I find useful for providing context in the comment section, like indicating parent poster and original poster, coloring references, coloring indentations as well as formatting YC startups.

Other quality of life features include adding submissions as favorites (it is stored as a pretty-printed json so you can check it into your vcs to allow for readable diffs). Submissions are marked as read and new comments are indicated with a bullet point.

,Ask HN: Hiring managers and recruiters, how much does resume layout matter?I work at Big 4 and interview people regularly. I get to see the resumes of people who have passed 'resume round' and are now mostly subject to the feedback of the interviewers.

I'm constantly shocked out how many resumes I see that follow none of the best practices everyone involved in 'resume review' talks about. College students with 2+ page resumes. Poor layout choices. Overall 'unprofessional' (font choice, size, coloring, etc) looking. Lots of extra details about their pet, choir, etc. that we're always told to omit unless we're applying at the student union.

Honestly, none of this bothers me. I firmly care more about their accomplishments and ability to perform in the interview than how their PDF looks. But it surprises me that it doesn't seem to concern the people who review candidates purely on their resume. Given some of these resumes, you'd think it was done entirely by a computer. Is it?

Curious what recruiters and hiring managers think about traditional resume best-practices and how much they care about 'bad looking' resumes..
,Ask HN: Best place for tech blog? There's no lack of options for a general purpose blog — Medium and Ghost and WordPress all seem great — but it's unclear what the best choice for a tech-focused one is. In particular, I'd like to include code snippets with syntax colouring and embed D3 visualizations. An enjoyable reading experience is the primary concern; ease of authoring less so.

Is a static site (say, using GitHub Pages) the best choice? The built-in discovery and sharing features of Medium are attractive, but I'm unsure if a blog about niche programming topics will benefit from them. Any options beyond the mainstream blogging platforms that I should consider?.
,Ask HN: Why is Disney+ UX so bad?A few weeks ago I bought a one month Disney+ subscription to check it out. I have all kinds of problems when using their web player compared to Netflix and YouTube:

- subtitle settings get reset every time I close the website.

- the button for changing subtitles is in the upper right corner. Once you open the menu the button for closing it appears in the upper left corner. You can't close the menu by clicking outside of it, despite the fact that you can still see the blurred video in the background.

- pressing space doesn't pause the video, but repeats the last action you did. If you closed the subtitle menu by pressing esc, pressing space will open it again. If you entered the full screen mode, pressing space will close it.

- there is no way (afaik) to open a list of all episodes from within the player. You have to go back to the show's main page, choose the season (because it always defaults to season 1) and scroll a horizontal list (which always defaults to the first episode) using a button that appears only once you hover it. Scrolling with a mouse scroll/touchpad doesn't work.

- it is impossible to search for movies using a director's name. For example, I know that Disney+ has a lot of Charlie Kaufman's and Wes Anderson's movies available - they are my favorite directors - but I couldn't quickly check which specific movies there are.

I know that it's possible that I have higher standards of UX because I'm a programmer, but I doubt that Disney+'s interface is intuitive to anyone..
,HN Please Note: Your Votes Might Not Be Getting CountedHi Guys,

I just wanted to share something with you - there's a good chance that your votes aren't getting counted on the site.

If you tend to navigate away from a page (front page or comments page) within 3-5 seconds of voting, it's possible that your vote won't get counted.

HN at many times can take several seconds to process a page load. Voting is no exception. If the site is taking a few seconds or more to load each page, that's exactly how long it'll take for your vote to go through! Be sure to wait a few seconds before navigating away from or closing a page..
,Rate my product - mostrecent.nethttp://mostrecent.net/

My idea: to build a community of topical-hand-edited news pages. I want to start in the tech community working to recruit editors/experts to build pages covering programming languages and popular technologies. Think of it as an alternative to blogs, tweets, and social link sites. Here an expert can build out a page with the most useful links and highlight news items that he/she knows are important to the community. Everything is tabulated into one easy to scan page. This is all managed via a drop and drop interface.

The short intro video should give more context about how the site works:

http://mostrecent.net/help/introclip/

I'm just getting out of my 'soft launch' phase and the JavaScript page I've built has already started making the rounds and gaining regular readers. It is a good example of what I'm going for:

http://mostrecent.net/javascript/

We are still in beta and more features are coming. My eventual business plan is to place ads on the pages with an aggressive editor rev share program. There are a number of pages at various levels of development on the site, but I know for a fact we still need pages covering ruby, java, flash, perl, lisp, tech startups, apple, c# and much more (in case anyone is interested).

Thanks for your time and attention! I look forward to your feedback..

,Ask HN: Long landing page or multiple pages?I've noticed that some startups use very long landing pages that seem to describe every feature of their product. I look at those and think they should really be split up over multiple pages. I'm wondering if anybody has any insight as to why those are becoming more popular?

My speculation is that it is for SEO purposes and that somehow one page covering everything is better than more targeted pages covering individual features? I'm seen some guides that imply the latter is a better way to optimize which implies long landing pages are bucking the trend..

,VC's: Experienced 50 year old with good ideas. Will you talk to me?For context:

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=6932327

I have a ton of business and tech experience. I've launched several garage businesses. One did really well but the economy, circumstances and a perennially under-funded state (hardware is capital intensive) killed it. All were interesting experiences.

I've never raised any money. I self-funded everything I've ever done. The last one to the tune of over half a million dollars of my own money. I am no stranger to being all-in and putting it all on the line for something I believe in.

Circumstances are different now. Either I take my time and bootstrap from small to large projects or look for investors.

Sadly, I will not move to SV and I will not live on noodles. Bummer.

I have identified two opportunities I think have merit.

The first is a pure software web/mobile service. As is often the case, it is a twist on existing product. I believe the twist is what makes it very interesting, gives it wide appeal and could make it huge. It can go global. I have a 70 page deck covering just about every aspect of this venture. No, it's not a new Facebook. It's a B-to-B, C-to-C (and permutations thereof) service.

The second is a novel use of quadcopters. No regulatory issues I am aware of. Sizable world-wide appeal. This is definitely a case of first-mover advantage. With proper funding and support, execution would be fast and painless. This wouldn't be a an R&D project. This is a D project. Define, develop and go to manufacturing. Heard of "live long and prosper"? This one is "move fast and conquer". Probably the Klingon version. I don't have a deck on this one. It's a recent discovery of mine and I've put zero time into developing a deck. With one video I can show anyone this is a good idea.

Looking for a low impedance bank account to help launch either or both of these..
,Tell HN: A private library in SF that could double as a hackerspaceIf you think coffee shops are too loud and coworking spaces are too expensive, you might appreciate this hack. I discovered it by accident while search for 'wood paneling' on Yelp. :-)

The Mechanic's Institute, near the corner of Post and Market, is a non-profit private library and chess club, and membership only costs $100 per year. That's considerably better than the $300 a month charged by the least expensive coworking spaces! It's also, in my humble opinion, a much more beautiful workspace. The building has tall ceilings and windows, large columns, wood-paneled study rooms, plush leather chairs, and large desks with power outlets. The wifi is also fast and reliable.

The reviews on the library's Yelp page will give you a good sense of what it's like:

http://www.yelp.com/biz/mechanics-institute-library-and-chess-room-san-francisco

I hope to see you here! It would be great to make this a well-known hacker outpost in downtown SF. Perhaps we could even organize a daily lunch or afternoon tea. Here's a chat room where we can coordinate:

http://www.tlk2me.com/chat/#mecha

You can also find my email in my HN profile. If you're visiting SF or want to spend a day here before committing to a membership, I can get you in as a guest..
,Ask HN: Any cooking/recipe websites with good UX?I don't know what it is about cooking and recipe-focused websites. They seem to be some of the worst in terms of pop ups, and superfluous garbage content. I spend so much time searching for the actual content on most pages because there are so many links to other crap.

For example, check out this Betty Crocker page where there's about 300px of whitespace at the top, a huge useless picture of flour, and a navbar that doesn't quite stick to the top of the page (viewing on Firefox) https://www.bettycrocker.com/how-to/tipslibrary/charts-timetables-measuring/equivalent-measures-abbreviations

Another example is allrecipes.com. I think it fares pretty well on Desktop, but on my phone I notice they insert adds throughout the ingredient list and instructions. Also met with a full-screen popup from Amazon about Cyber Monday.

There's gotta be some plain and simple sites out there, and I'd like to hear about them..
,Ask HN: What is a fair price to write a tech book?Dear Hacker News,

I have recently been contacted by a publishing company and have been asked to write a 150 - 180 page book covering the essentials of Zendesk (a large company that sells support request software) and I am wondering what would be fair compensation for this work. My timeline is 1.5 months for the 1st draft and here is their explanation of payment:

"We would be paying you an advance against future royalties of 16% which is worth around $1000 (depending on the estimate writing timeline) and split across the writing timeline. Shorter the timeline higher the advances. Normally the breakdown of the advance is:

50% of advance for delivery and acceptance of the first draft of all chapters.n 25% of advance for delivery and acceptance of the final draft of all chapters.n 25% of advance upon publication. "

If I understand this right, 1000$ with no future royalties sounds extremely low, given the time it would take to write a book, but what would a fair price be?

Thanks,nEric.
,Ask HN: Startup Living NYCStartup Living NYC

I just made it to the city with everything I own and version one of my product SureDone - I've got some resources including http://www.linkedlistnyc.org , http://www.generalassemb.ly , http://startupdigest.com/new-york-city/ , and http://wiki.coworking.info/w/page/16583629/CoworkingNewYorkCity to keep one busy for time to come.

I'm looking for startup centric living resources like startup housing or targeted communities. Low rent options to give time for new resident me to establish a home. Cheap safe places to sleep in the city at night would be of most help.

I came here to make friends, win peers, trade labor, and build internet business, win or die...

Any help is greatly appreciated..
,Ask HN: Website Idea, Online resumes done righttl;dr: Your online resume.

Backstory: August of last year, after a year and a half from my last startup closing down, I decided it was time to get back to work. The time had been spent with my family, and watching my son in his first year. It was a good time. But getting back to work would mean getting a job, and at the time, I was more concerned about a solid pay check. Obviously, in this economic climate, it was a bit scary, but I had ample experience and was confident I could land a job. I went to work. I had to create a resume, and then get it up online. I bought the domain name, and put it up there. Spent quite a bit of time getting it right. In the end, this is what allow my current employer to find me. A search on Google came up with my resume as the first result, provided the proper contact information, and made it easy for them to get in contact with me. After interviews and negotiations, I got the job.

My brother is in a situation like this as well. He's part of the inspiration for this project. The idea is that I had to spend time putting together the website, the design, even as simple as it was, and making sure it got up on the search engines. None of this was difficult for me to do, but for someone like my brother, he doesn't even realize it's something he should do. A resume on Monster.com isn't geared toward the masses and SEO. It's geared toward Monster.com searching.

Since leaving school, I've gotten all my jobs because someone knew me somehow and recommended me in some capacity. Of those, 3 of them also included what I did online. One, in fact, included me walking into the interview with a stack an inch thick of what the interviewer had found online about me.

The reality is, most people get jobs through word of mouth. Someone knows someone, or their is some common ground. At least the good jobs.

So, the idea for the site is bred from some simple ideas:

1. It's good to have a website dedicated to your resume. To promoting yourself. You want a search result with your name to return your resume, your own personal advertisement, rather than some random Facebook page.

2. You want to always be promoting yourself. The job market has changed, and you want to be out there. If someone is interested in searching for you, you don't want them to have to go searching for more information. You want that information to be easily found.

3. Most people don't have the time or energy to invest in creating an highly optimized online resume. Couple this with the cost of having to buy hosting, and the price can get a bit high just for a place to put an online resume.

4. People need jobs. In the current market, job hunting has become even more important. People are becoming aware that it's important to always be prepared to find a job. If you aren't actively pursuing a better job, you're hurting yourself.

5. For far too long, job hunting has been employer-centric. Advertise a job, receive resumes. People are coming to accept that advertising their own skills is becoming important. Social networks are, in a way, teaching people to put their lives online in an orderly fashion; a personal resume.

6. Employers focus too much on accepting resumes instead of getting what they want. It's difficult for employers to find people with the skills they need on their own, without going through an agency. Even then, it's still focused on hiring unemployed people or people that are actively looking.

These are pretty broad ideas, but rather simple. They describe the problems, the issues at hand. The service seeks to solve these problems in various ways, to service not only the potential employees, but the employers as well.

1. Simple to use. The site is focused on providing an efficient, professional resume. You fill in the blanks. The goal is to be fast, painless, and get up something good, quick.

2. The service is meant to be long term. Year-long terms here. The idea goal is for the resume to be a 'living resume.' It updates itself, or you update it, with the current status. It's smart. A year goes by, and 5 years of experience becomes 6, for example. You are encouraged to update.

3. Everything is optimized. The page itself is optimized for search engines. The design will be optimized for easy viewing. Easy printing. Easy sharing. SEO will not just be on the resume itself, but also for searching. Need a Rails Developers in Atlanta Georgia? We'll make that easy to find.

4. You're always promoting yourself. The goal is to make a search for your name appear at or near the top of the search result. This is, after all, your page with your professional information.

5. No ads. I mean, the entire site is basically an advertisement, each page for a particular person, if you want to get technical, but no flashing banner ads, text ads, etc.

6. Low cost. Pay a yearly fee, something reasonable.

There is a lot of potential for expanding the services offered. Being able to put up a portfolio would be important. Pictures of yourself if you wanted. Customization through CSS.

Standards would be important. Exporting contact information as well as the resume itself. All the data would be used and indexed on. Searching and pages could be made on anything.

Anyway's, that's a brief overview of the idea. There are tons of other specifics, and other ideas, as well as ways to go about marketing it and getting users. My questions are simple:

1. Would you pay for a service like this?
2. Do you know others that would pay for a service like this?
3. Have you ever built an online resume/portfolio?
4. Would this service benefit professionals in industries outside web developers?
5. Would businesses outside web-based/focused companies use such a means to find employers?

I'm sure there are other questions, I'll have, and frankly, you don't need to answer these questions point by point. Just wanted to give you an idea of some of the initial questions I might have. Any input at all is encouraged.

As a final point, I've searched online for a service like this, and while I've found a few that promote the same basic thing, I haven't found anything that really capture what I would want in a service. In tech-terms: a Web 2.0 Online Resume site.

I've put a lot of thought into this, played around with some initial designs, hacked up some code, but at this stage, I'm more eager to gain some initial feedback before investing heavily into this idea. So, have at it.

And thanks for reading..
,Ask HN: Pre-launch feedback on my sitePrompted in part by HN, I am in what I hope to be the final stages of launching v1 of a new site. Five sentences of background:

I am a blogger/freelance copywriter/marcom guy who is always monitoring the latest and greatest in tech. I have an immense interest in web services and a great admiration for the people/teams behind them, simply put, because they make my life easier. I do not however, have an appropriate outlet through which I can share the various services I come across and thank the teams behind them by giving them exposure. Most services I find do not fit well with the content I cover at the main blog I write for, so I needed another way. As such, I did my best to create one...

Services like Stumble Upon, Digg, etc are fantastic for people who have plenty of expendable time to devote. Even with the big-name blogs covering web apps and services, it can be hard for the average office worker to keep up with the waterfall. I wanted to try hitting the problem from a different angle - using the Woot.com principle as a basic model.

My site, worthyy, presents users with one new site to explore each day. The presentation is unique in that users experience each day's site without any outside influence from me or anyone else (beyond visible ratings). I want the developer's work to do the talking, so the homepage of worthyy is dynamic. It consists of two frames: The main frame being the actual site of the day and a secondary frame in front of it near the bottom of the screen (the 'worthyy bar'). Users can browse and experience the site of the day as if they had hit it directly. If they so desire, they can also use the worthyy bar to rate the site, bookmark the site or click through to interact with others and discuss the site on worthyy's supporting pages (wordpress).

http://worthyy.com

Thanks in advance for any feedback you guys might have. We do have a few issues left to be resolved - and when I say we I mean the developers I outsourced the project to. I know, I know - but without any coding experience or time to learn, I had no choice. For this reason of course, your feedback is invaluable. Barring catastrophe the site should be ready to launch next week. Thanks also to the few HN members who have been involved with preliminary testing and for their feedback. I already have some great additions lined up for v2 should I be lucky enough to get that far with the project..
,Show HN: Post processing a html page with webglI recently discovered html2canvas (awesome but I wish it was 1.0) and used it with webgl to re-render my web page.

Click on the image (Awolnation) and wait a few seconds (it might take some time to buffer audio)

Basically it takes ss of current visible part of html page, creates an empty canvas covering the screen and then renders that ss with post processing.

edit: there is a music so might not be work safe if you are using speakers.

This took SO many hours and it isn't even technically the first page... Maybe I should have picked something easier for my first time trying adult coloring, but I've always been ambitious.
