hi guys, it's great to see you again i'm miss, julie and i'm your visual artist for, this lesson, today we're going to talk about, mesopotamia and babylon and, you're going to create an artwork about, the hanging, gardens of babylon, we're going to be talking about a social, living topic, mesopotamia in the days of the past, and view artworks from the ishtar, gates the present day, and middle east iraq and we're going to, wonder about the future to come, the materials we're going to be using, today a piece of paper, pencil and eraser and, a box of crayons, all right we're going to take a look at, ancient mesopotamia, and it was located in the middle east, area so if you see this, oops this is a map of the world and this, is, africa here russia here this is asia, okay and china and all that see here, next, on asia there is the middle east to this, little, almost l looking area well mesopotamia, was right in this area see, see what it looks like here it's, actually seen egypt is right here, all this area so this is what, and this is an ancient mesopotamian, what's the word ancient mean, ancient means very long ago, so the middle east was called, mesopotamia in the ancient times, see all this area in the pink just to, let you know that's where the ground is, fertile because of the rivers, that means that they have a lot of, desert areas all around, and the ground would get a little water, from there, from those areas the most, so the rest of the areas were dry desert, lands, there's two rivers in the mesopotamia, there's the euphrates, which is right here on this side, and the tigris, the the river was used to bring, food like you could catch fish and, they watered their crops they planted, wheat and barley, they also used it to drink and it was, also used the river was used for, transportation, people traveled up and down the rivers, in, boats to trade and trade means to, exchange goods, with other cities that were around, they also had people who, bought and selled goods those were they, called the merchants, so as the cities grew they started to, make canals with the canal is like a, great big ditch, where the water flows and they could, move it all over the country around the, areas, from the two great rivers so they could, move water from one place, to another the people also collected, rainwater in reservoirs it's like a, great big lake, to store the water for future use, babylon was the capital city of, babylonia a kingdom, in ancient mesopotamia between 18th and, the 6th century bc, it was built along both sides, of the euphrates river with steep, embankments which means uh the sides, were really steep, that's to contain the river from uh the, seasonal flooding, the ishtar gates was one of the eight, gates of the inner city of babylon it, was built about, 575 bc it was a tall wide gate with blue, glazed bricks glittering in the sunlight, named after a babylonian goddess, foundation of the gate was about 45 feet, with, molded unglazed figures, it has been reconstructed in different, sizes in the, pergamon museum in berlin, from the glazed bricks found, so its original height is now, 47 feet it was decorated with, the glazed brick reliefs in tears of, dragons and young bulls the gate itself, was a double one with a, processional way over a length of more, than, half a mile king nebuchadnezzar, ii of babylon dedicated, the great ishtar gates to the goddess, ishtar, his goal was to beautify his capital the, ishtar gates was the starting point, for processions babylonians, would assemble in front of it and march, through the, trumpful archway and proceed along the, sacred way, to the seven-story ziggurat which was, crowned near the temple, now remember the ziggurat was the temple, building on the very top, wild bulls ferocious dragons, symbolize the gods, enameled tile of glorious blue, surrounded, with the bright colors of yellow and, brown for the beasts, in front of the gateway outside the city, was a road, with walls decorating the relief of, lions and glazed yellow tile, nebuchadnezzar had the famous hanging, gardens, built for his queen amethyst who was, homesick for her land, of the hills and mountains with green, metals tall trees, colorful flowers, the king decided to build her a mountain, covered with green plants, rising many stories above the roof of, the city was a man-made hill, it had the series of level platforms, built on top of one another connected by, ramps and stairways, platforms like bleachers in a sports, stadium, the platforms were covered by trees, vines and blooming flowers, the level parts of the gardens were made, of mud brick covered in lead, so water would not leak through, the gardens were an architectural and, engineering feat, they had an elaborate engineering water, system on platforms, most of the plants that were there were, not native, a desert plants the gardens have been, described as raised, quadrangular platforms with arched, vaults, built on stone columns said to be 75, feet high, the gardens were more like a series of, lush balconies, kept green by the elaborate irrigation, system, there were claims the gardens were, actually near the tigris river, in nevada which was, approximately 300 miles north of iraq, aqueducts in line with what could have, been expected from the gardens of, babylon, back in those days there was an area, there that was named new babylon so that, might have led to some of the confusion, today's project on mesopotamia, mesopotamia in babylon we will create an, artwork of the hanging gardens of, babylon, you may want to add your own designs in, this, project as you saw from the ishtar, ruins earlier see remember this was the, this is one of uh or actually two, different, depictions from other artists how they, thought it might look, so today we're going to need a paper and, you're going to start off with your, pencil i am going to go ahead and use my, marker, because you won't be able to see it if i, don't, so we're going to place our paper, horizontally and of course on the back, of your paper flip your paper over write, your name, all right and flip it back over we're, going to want it horizontal, not portrait style or vertical, we want it horizontal to go across this, way all right, so uh if you'd like to i'll tell you, what we can go ahead and kind of fold, your paper, a little bit let's fold our paper i like, to do that sometimes, folder paper okay and when you open it, up, you see you have this little imaginary, line that's here, we're going to know that we're going to, have different layers of our gardens, okay and we're going to start off um, [Music], here's our middle section and we're, going to go like a couple, a finger above and a couple fingers, below, we're going to draw a line so we're, going to go ahead and try here's our, paper, and we're going to go ahead and do a, line above, and we're going to do a line below, now if you need to if you went too far, you'll be able to erase anything that, you did, so we're going to have a line that's, kind of medium and a, longer line here actually the longest, line, will be all the way towards the bottom, all right and we're gonna so we have one, really extremely long one one that's, quite long and we have a smaller medium, we're gonna even go smaller right here, and do one there all right, so we have one line two line three line, four lines, and we can go ahead and draw lines, coming down, so let's see i'm going to draw my line, coming down, draw a line coming down it almost looks, like a birthday cake, a really big oh how about a wedding cake, yeah it looks almost like a wedding cake, if you get one like this for your, birthday you must have a, huge cake you have to invite me to come, over, because i need to have a piece of that, cake, and we're going to put a little round, hilltop, they have made a hill of it then uh they, had, a lot of the arched, gates an arch is like oh like a rainbow, so let's go ahead and from one side to, another we're gonna do like a little, arch, i'll tell you what let's make a number, 11 first i love to do a number 11., so about halfway on each one i could, have done that over a little more, and we're going to do a rainbow so see i, want to ghost my rainbow so here's my, rainbow, my rainbow there you go that's one, arched, area so here we go another number 11, another number 11 and uh i'll skip a, space, let's see i'm gonna do one here and i'll, do another one, here cool and remember our, rainbow and a rainbow here we go rainbow, or it's also called a curved line, curved line so i'm going to like to go, right down the middle, and try to do another number 11 like, right underneath, you can actually think about your, project, you can do it like this and it's, actually going to come out, similar to one like this where i'm going, to put water coming down like a, waterfall, or if you want to you can put steps on, it, if you want to make steps anywheres in, the project if you want to do steps, coming down one side and, coming down the other you could but just, showing you an example of what it looks, like, okay and remember we were doing, these the gardens, and many artists as you've seen, have shown them all different kinds of, ways so, this is just one style i decided to go, with and you can decide as you're doing, it, so here's my number 11, and my other number 11., and my arch there we go, now like i said you can put you some, steps if you like, i think i'm going to just do waterfalls, and if you want to make a double line, across you can, i'll just do a double line across make, it just easy this way, awesome so now that we have this, wherever you're going to want to put, water, you're going to take your blue crayon, and put us wavy lines, here's my blue crayon and let's see uh, i'm gonna put my little wavy lines here, that's gonna be some water coming down, on mine, you can do yours separately different, you can put steps if you want, and all you have to do is put lines, across and this, and that'll be your steps if you want, i'm just putting mine here and then i'm, gonna have water coming down here, did you know that they had to have, something that was like a water mill, to pump up the water that somebody that, would have to pull the water that would, go all the way towards the top, so they had to dream up all kinds of, fancy irrigation systems for this, garden so put your little water, what kind of line goes up and down, and has curves on both sides there's, curve going one way and a curve going, another way, and when we all need green and brown, now let me show you some of the, tropical plants that you could possibly, be using, you have all different kinds of tropical, plants and leaves that you can be having, in this picture i'm going to put them so, you can see them, if we can, can you see it at the same time and i'll, just leave it here, so that you can look at it all right, i'm going to go ahead and put a little, tree coming up and i'm going to go ahead, and put, you can put as many as you want, that's going to give me an idea and i, can come back and use my brown again, because i will need it, i'm going to think of some little clouds, little clouds kind of just floating in, the space so this is like a little cloud, and this one's like a little cloud, and this is like a little cloud, you can even put clouds behind the, clouds, and what i'm going to do is i'm going to, color the inside of these little clouds, which are not, clouds at all it's just the way these, trees kind of look like you see these, kind of trees, a lot in, africa areas and this is actually, see how that looks like a little tree, and of course the base, of the tree has to be a little thicker, it could you can't stand on your, fingertips, right so that's one tree i'm going to go, ahead and do some, palm trees there's all different kinds, of palm trees but, there goes one little curved line and, another curved line you can do curved, lines just coming out of it almost like, a big spider, having legs all different directions huh, and on this one, look i'm going to do little lines, see my little lines little lines, little lines, little lines, if you like one of the plants more than, the other you can put more of the same, plant, there we go and this one i'm gonna do, zigzags on it after i have my, little spider looking thing you can put, five or six, whatever i like five because it's, usually a pretty good number but you can, put whatever you want and you can go, ahead and do little zigzags, zigzag oops i broke my crayon didn't, mean to, maybe, see how they each look a little, different and just, color a little bit on the inside, just a little bit there we go, uh let's see i'm gonna go ahead and come, out with some bushes, and other i'm gonna put another let me, put a regular little tree coming up, just a regular little tree kind of like, we would see here, because they have all different kinds of, trees and what kind of shape do you, think the tree would work for, there we go and this is the fun part, this is the water coming down like a, little waterfall, right oh i don't put enough on this side, we're going to go ahead and add all, kinds of little i'd like to just, do little circles, and if i want to put some long, areas and some things will be falling, down, coming down and, i can go all the way across because, nobody's going to be crossing over that, they had, plants hanging from all over remember, this was, like a little hill of grasses and plants, and you could put some hanging down just, draw something hanging down, see how it's starting to look like it's, full of plants, and all kinds of little plants you could, pick any kind that you want, of course we're going to be doing them, quite small so we really won't be able, to see much of, it, in fact i'm going to just go all the way, across because, there and i could i have a, maybe a plant coming right here, like a bush on the side here, maybe a bush on the side here, maybe they have some baskets you know, they did make baskets so maybe they had, hanging baskets, they might have had bad things hanging, down from here, and i'll come back and color some more, up in a minute i'm going to, lightly color brown in here i like to, mix it with peach and brown, just to give it a look, i like to put peach and brown how's it, coming, peach and brown, remember that water is actually coming, down, off the balconies i guess you could say, so i'm going to come back and grab some, of that and grab my peach, and my greens and add more greenery, see how it's starting to look like it, was part of a building, and if i don't stay in the line exactly, it's all right, i'm going to come back in and put blue, right over that that very, center and let's see right here some of, this is going to be brown, so you can go ahead and put trees on the, side you can put, steps wherever you want to put steps, so, i'm having fun i just love to color and, mix color i'll be coming back let's see, i'm gonna put little bushes, and this is probably some of it what, walks right out into the, maybe some of it would be in hanging, baskets or some areas, let's see maybe have some hanging stuff, that's holding it, and you might have stuff hanging down, and uh let's see, maybe i have something else that's just, right here, and it's holding things hanging down, and i would say they have a whole bunch, of little plants, if you want to put flowers you can add, little flowers in there, give it some orange coloring and i'll, put some little flowers, if i have red and yellow in there, maybe some i like, something that looks like little purple, irises, maybe i have some more on this side who, knows remember, this was all watered regularly they had, to water it all the time, maybe some little red flowers they could, have roses in there, let's symbolize it by putting some, little areas, with green and red little circles work, little scribbles okay i'm going to take, my little, blue here and rub out, just the bottom area if you want to add, little lines of purple in the water, we'll do the sky and our, sun, maybe a little bit of purple in here, in the water coming down, then i'll come back and i'll i do want, to put some browns and stuff so i can, see, they do have some of the, the brown showing because of the, building, the waterfall is coming off the building, not off the ground but off the building, waterfall off the building, if you want to darken your areas inside, you can darken them inside you can put, some plants coming out from inside there, too as well, oh i'm having so much fun all right, let's see i'm going to go ahead and put, me a sunshine i like to do a little, kind of swirly thing coming out here and, maybe a couple of rays of sunlight, and then i like to take my yellow, and bring my yellow right over it, i'll just move all this up, and just do it right on top of it see, just right on top of it, and put beams of light coming out, see beams of light then i like to take, my white, and do white in between all around it, the reason i like to put white is, because when, white and blue mix it turns everything, kind of green and i don't want my, sunshine green, so a lot of times i'll put white next to, my son, i'll put white next to my son that way, when i come around let's see i don't, think i got i have some here, oh i love coloring with y'all, and just lightly rub, now if you have your blue you can rub, the front part of your, blue too as well but i'll go ahead and, use my little rubbing one so that i can, get some blues around, if you're not finished with your artwork, do it when you have a moment like when, you're going to recess or something, or if you're in a rainy day lunch, i've really enjoyed working with you, i hope to work again with you soon, have an awesome day take a moment and, view your neighbor's artwork
