[Music], hi guys welcome back okay today we're, going to have a pretty important lesson, this is like gonna be one that you can't, miss because a lot of the things we're, going to be progressing to come from, today's lesson so the first thing we're, going to do is we're gonna put down our, pencils we're going to raise our right, hands put our left hand over our heart, and repeat after me, I state your name do solemnly swear, never ever ever never to color hair like, they do in handling books we have past, this stage now I like handling don't get, me wrong I think she is her stuff is, adorable her girls are just cute as a, button but this if you are coloring from, this book this is not gonna help you and, what do I mean and you know you have, done it before I'm going to show you my, shame it's a bunch of hookers, I actually colored a bunch of hookers, hair does not look like this hair does, not look like that and that is scary, let's move on to much better things this, picture came out of Mysteria and I had, one given up on this book but now I have, my textured fixative which is going to, add to to the page much needed tooth for, gorgeous pictures and this book is by, Anastasia Anastasia Ellie called the, rarer called are ever you know me and, pronouncing names, absolutely beautifully you can get this, book on Etsy she is about to come out, with another book and if this works out, where I can get this tooth going I, cannot wait till her next book she knows, how to draw pictures what we're going to, look for in books now is hair that flows, now in this picture you could see her, hair is flowing and I want to show you, some examples in some other books this, is in hidden paradise by Chris Lopez I, love these books these are some of my, favorite books and you see how the hair, flows you can even find flowing hair in, a Maria tall tree book and here we got, it this is a very good page while her, face is not very realistic the hair, could be this potential there another, fantastic book Nicholas F I nobody, changed his name on the internet to, something that we can all pronounce cuz, you don't really think I'm going to, pronounce that serene one of my favorite, books excellent quality paper so I made, a copy of this because I actually want, to do this page and I'm going to do it, in graphite I haven't decided yet if, it's gonna be this exact page but I just, ordered myself some graphite pencils and, I'm just like in the mood to do a, graphite so the next portrait I'm gonna, do is going to be in graphite so I, wanted to show you exactly what I was, doing so I could just relax with my next, picture and just let it flow and you've, already gotten all the basic details now, this is gonna probably change up the way, a lot of you are doing your portrait, pictures in the books I'm gonna teach, you how to do hair properly and not the, coloring book way but, we are coloring book artists we're, limited to what is given to us so you, want to start with good bones and that's, a good picture, nice hair so this was perfect, you need the matter what color you are, doing the hair always when doing hair, you have to have sharp pencils okay get, comfortable and I want you before you, put your pencil to the paper I want you, to examine the hair you've got lines, flowing this way lines flowing this way, don't fight it, I see a lot of people they do hey you, know your coloring the hair and I see, lines going in all different directions, what we're gonna do we want to go with, the flow of the picture and I want to, take each individual area separately, seeing this is very daunting and I make, it be frightening where hair is a lot of, fun to do so we're gonna take each, individual area and we're gonna locate, those hard and soft lines what did I, mean by hard and soft I did a video on, it hard and soft lines separate objects, so say we're gonna look at this piece of, hair right here this piece of hair is, not this piece of hair this piece of, hair goes on top of this piece of hair I, want you to define the edge okay and I, want you to do that before you start, coloring any sort of way on here just to, define the edge of the way the hair is, gonna flow okay that is the clump of, hair this is a nut clump of hair so, we're gonna define it and we're gonna go, and we're gonna take it all the way down, and it doesn't matter if you get out the, lines because hair does go out and we're, gonna define the lines on here okay so, now we have this and we have this in, between we have another clump of hair, this is gonna just be a shaded area so, you can put in a little bit of shading, so that you can but not too much we're, gonna go through this entire picture, defining the clumps and here you go, right here this separates hair from, going this way this way this way this, way this way this way just by having, this defined I want you to be slow I, don't want you to be fast about this, we're setting the picture up for great, things so here we have another clump of, hair here the hair goes this way this is, on top of here we're gonna put in some, defining lines here is completely, different so we're going to define it, we're gonna create that hard line you're, gonna do this to the entire page now it, doesn't matter which book you're working, at here's the Maria book let me get to, the page, okay here's the page on here we're not, gonna just automatically start coloring, down everything you're gonna get out, that sharp pencil only pencils starting, to get a little bit dull nice sharp edge, and you're gonna define me areas now if, you look over here this is defined right, here is the find it ends right there, okay this is another hair okay, and it starts up here so right here, would be one this is the other side of, this one with defining where these, clumps are now if you look up here you, could define it going right here now by, defining it you're gonna be able to put, your shadows in where they really go if, this is on top of this your shadow is, gonna go this way, if this is on top of this your shadow is, gonna go this way because your light, goes to whatever is on top over here, this is on top of this so if we define, this okay right there we have another, one going right here and of course the, big one right here you will immediately, know now I wouldn't be doing this so, dark I'm just doing this so that you, to see it the shadow would be right here, then the shadow would be over here and, the shadow was in here the next step in, doing this now I'm going to go back to, the other book just easier to see you're, going to do these little areas now I'm, going to just choose one and I think I'm, gonna do um let's see I'll do this I'm, gonna define this whole area now it, doesn't matter what color you're using, I'm gonna look on the inside and it, seems like we have another one twisting, damn so this would not be a whole clump, this would be twisting into here so, really this is right here is the clump, not this whole thing what you're gonna, do is you're gonna eat going to use, tapered strokes and tapered stroke, starts out well if the page goes onto, the page and then off the page so that, there's little points and you're going, to go with the flow now as you're going, down, you're gonna see these little hat these, little spaces in here so you're gonna, stop you're gonna choose like two or, three and you're gonna darken in a, little bit, okay, now remember this is not the same clump, we've defined the edges we've got some, darkened areas on the inside and now, with whatever color you know your next, color so you want to bring out a, different color now I'm using charcoal, but say I want to use I want to make her, hair brown and here's dark umber okay, I'm gonna put in layers in between in, those darkened area in the light areas, okay, what is left is gonna define your, highlights in the hair now it could be, right here but a highlight would not be, an individual hair now as you keep going, and as you're going to see when I demo, this as you keep going with the clumps, of hair you're going to remember where, you're defining lines are because it's, oh that's going to be your clump now, this might you might want to do is, highlight this clump of hair so I would, take my hair making tapered lines and I, would go down into there I'm not going, to stop and make a clump of a clump I'm, not going to take it and do a handle Lin, okay her hair stops and everybody does, it the same way they make sort of like, their, that's awful hair does not highlight, that way you're going to join two ends, of tapered strokes and I'll show you how, to do that now so here we have a clump, of hair and you've put in these lines I, want to put a highlight in over here, what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna leave a, little space and I'm gonna stop my next, highlight I'm gonna stop my next clump, I'm gonna define there or you may have, had it defined already and by rendering, those tapered strokes to face each other, you have a natural highlight now of, course you're gonna take it and you're, gonna develop it much further I'm gonna, look now to find my like over here, there's a dark in the area in here so, maybe I'll make that darker there's a, darkened area over here, and maybe one up here this is gonna give, the hair depth because it doesn't just, have a surface it has an underneath now, another thing you can do and you want to, go slow I'm going sass but you want to, slow it down make your individual, strokes and you could darken it up you, can have it twist all depending on how, you want your hair now if I want to make, another highlight going down and I want, to make this longer I just keep going, making sure my edge on the hair is, defined so that this stays as one clump, now look what I can do right here I can, make this go directly into there and, then have the direction change now as, far as blending goes let's get out a, little bit teeny tiny bit of mineral, spirits I was playing with some things, earlier so my brushes not that clean, it's the same color so I can use it if, you want to give this hair some, highlight some real depth you can take, your brush and blur it up a little bit, okay, not too much don't overwork it let that, dry a few seconds and then you can come, in with some other hair this will give, you an illusion of thickening hair or, hair that's underneath now when are you, gonna do this you can do a reverse now, this is a old trick on that many artists, do you take your eraser and you go in, and you make light lines I need a new, battery on here this is another way you, can create highlights another way is, with the kneaded eraser the kneaded, eraser to me is a little bit better I, always liked it better when I'm doing, highlights with an eraser or individual, hairs with an eraser because you can, control it and I usually this is this is, the way I make hair I just put a beak on, it and you can go in and really lighten, things up now this works of course much, better before you have the mineral, spirits on the hair but you get the idea, and it takes a while for it to honestly, start looking realistic but as you work, and you start defining it, suddenly your hair will start to change, and where you have those light lines, they start coming highlights and more, and more depth, keep the pencil sharp, okay so let's take a look on here what, we can do working the individual hair, remember this clump is different than, this clump so you have your defining, line that's gonna shade on top of it and, you see how my highlight is starting to, form going across the hair, so there's highlights in the hair and, there's the light coming down I'm, talking about light coming down it's, forming a line going through these, clumps and then we move on to the next, area, now it might be over here this is on top, of this so this area down here we know, is going to be darker keep your hair, going in the direction that it flows, okay so this hair sort of goes in a, diagonal I'm gonna work in that diagonal, if you have to check move your book, around to where it's comfortable in your, hand that's what you do and you're gonna, go in the direction of the hair using, your tapered strokes slow it down if, you're not in control keep an eye on, where that clump of hair is and you're, gonna go forming this one, go back and use your some of your tricks, you can use a little bit of mineral, spirits I don't really like to do, mineral spirits too much in hair because, you work so hard to get that individual, hairs going and defined and sometimes it, darkens it but there's a lot of artists, that do now I'm gonna catch the light, coming in here so my highlight is gonna, go right there that's where the Sun is, going to shine on this hair okay keep an, eye on where you are defining lines are, pick out the two or three really darken, areas so that you can give your hair, depth, and if you keep working it it will start, to look realistic now you can see where, the curl is it's coming down underneath, and it's sort of twisting over so this, takes a couple of hours and it's worth, putting in a couple of hours of work on, it sometimes a lot more than that when, you're happy with this area you move on, to this area so this area is above this, area so this is going to be darker this, is above this so right here is gonna be, darker it's gonna be shaded and then, you're gonna define where your highlight, is my highlight is moving in this, direction so maybe I'll taper it off, so give it a couple of hours of work and, you're gonna see the areas are gonna, really come to life now choose a couple, more strands that I'm gonna be darker, and then in this area where the, highlight is too much you might want to, darken it up how do you darken it up add, more lines more hairs now in the areas, where the highlights are you may not, choose to do a white or you might want, to put a white in there it it's up to, you if you want a darker highlight so, maybe you have or burn hair and you want, to put a blonde highlight in that's all, I'm choosing the color that is my lesson, on hair I'm going to do a full demo for, you guys so that'll be next take care
