welcome everyone it's miss gisa, today we're going to talk, about kente cloth the story i have for, you is called kente colors, and it's written by debbie chocolate, and illustrated by john ward, kente colors bright and bold, red, yellow blue, black and gold, emerald kente for harvest time, indigo blue for african skies, yellow kente for pineapples sweet, sunset kente red and deep, mud picante rich, and brown, gold dust in a kente crown, kenti colors silver and black swirling, around dancers backs, ivor kente for dark young brides, kente iv a newborn child, kente colors and bright silk robes, for generations young and old, there's an author's note at the back, dazzling colorful kente cloth made by, the ashanti people of ghana and the u of, ghana and togo were once known as the, cloth of kings, four hundred years ago at the height of, the ashanti king kingdom, only royalty wore kente, the word kente means that which will not, tear away under any condition, today for all people of ghana, traditional kente cloth is the national, costume it is often worn for ceremonial, occasions for festivals weddings and, births, in the weaving of kente cloth the cotton, or silk kente strips are hand woven, on narrow looms, together side by side, among the ashanti and you the art of, weaving kente is passed down from, generation to generation, each pattern is produced by the, placement of colors, each patchwork of colors has a different, meaning, gold dust a mostly yellow pattern, symbolizes wealth and royalty, another pattern called a wise old woman, symbolizes old age and wisdom, one pattern called that which has never, happened before, symbolizes uniqueness, many of the designs names have, historical references and have helped, preserve ashanti history, some of the designs are proverbs and, others indicate clan or status, colors are used symbolically in kente, green symbolizes bountiful harvest, blue represents love, ivory represents joy, ghanaian men drape kente cloth over, themselves and women wear kente as, skirts blouses and matching head wraps, no matter how it is worn kente cloth is, an art form that is beautiful to behold, now let's go do a little art lesson, all right are you ready to make your own, kente cloth, we're going to do so out of paper so, what you'll need is, a bottle of glue, scissors, a black sheet of construction paper, and then you can choose, the rest of the colors that you would, like, i chose white yellow red, purple and green, but again you can choose any colors you, would like, and what you're going to do is cut, different size, different lengths different widths of, rectangles out of the colored, construction paper, so remember that the different colors, have different meanings, so yellow means royalty or wealth white, purity healing and, it's used during festive occasions, i've also chosen green which is harvest, or growth, and purple means earth and healing, and red is, stands for blood, and the strong political and spiritual, feelings so again you can choose, whatever color you'd like just remember, to, make your strips some short some long, some thin some wider you can put down, your strips of paper, in any way, you'd like, and then we'll glue them, after, we lay them out, that way if you want you can switch the, papers around later if you need, something to fit differently, and then voila once you have laid out, your rectangles the way you'd like them, then you can go ahead and take your glue, and start to glue them down, and it's kind of like a puzzle, so you're making your very own, kente cloth, remember sometimes you have to hold it, down and maybe count to ten, while the glue and the paper really, stick together, then after you're done if if it still, needs to be pressed down a bit you can, always, put some heavy books on top of it, i ended up changing my design slightly, and as the artist, you can do that, and, there we have it i just need to press a, little book on top of that to keep it, oops forgot about this one to keep it, flat, but there you have it my very own kente, cloth, i can't wait to see yours remember to, send it to my instagram account at, butterfly garden preschool when you're, done happy kawanza, and remember to, hit that like button, and subscribe to see our future, activities, you
