John 1:1-14

John 1:1-14 34

today i'm going to color another color, in book illustration and i'll be using, every single color in the largest marker, set, oh my gosh it's like i like to punish, myself for something so i hope you're, ready so let's go, so i'm going to use this flower glass, coloring book by amsterdams again, but first here is miss from last time, if you watch that video you know how, nervous i was to even attempt this but, she came out stunning i'm gonna name her, daphne rosalie i think it just fits her, vibe so well so thank you guys for the, suggestions, and now to look for one for today, so because i'm trying to use every, single marker i want to find, one with loads of flowers in the, background something like this, where you can really color each, individual one, or maybe each of the twists in a, different color, okay so i love this vibe so i'm actually, thinking of doing something quite, different so instead of just coloring, the girl normally and then making a, super colorful background i want to, inject loads of color into our main girl, as well i don't know if you've seen, those portraits that are super super, super colorful so i want maybe like a, yellow orange on this side going over to, a gradient of purples and blues on the, other side i'm going to use this black, test page to figure out my color, placements but before we get into the, coloring a few of my favorites i've also, done similar videos so drawing with, fluffles and super easily and i think in, rin's video she swatched it as she used, this but i don't think i can do that, because i think i would need to know, what swatches are what before i actually, pick the colors you know it's time to, swatch these i think here are all the, markers i've got this on ultrawide, framing because this is what it would, look like normally but to barely get it, all in, my frame is the swatch cards are in here, should i pour it all out or 300 markers, oh my gosh, [Music], i might as well just start trying to, group here, pouring the markers like that was, definitely a mistake because it went, absolutely everywhere when i say under, the table, just all over the place, and i'm just trying to group it roughly, so this is more so like i can work in, sections of color rather than a whole, jumbled up mess, and actually i don't understand why who, don't sell the markers like this already, i feel like i really struggle to see a, wide range of colors when it's just, jumbled up, do you care if your markers and your, color pencils are grouped or is it just, however it comes, oh my gosh we are done that's 25 minutes, i think i've got everything in here off, of the floors now to actually swatch, them, the swatching process was really long, and kind of tedious, but i think it's such an important step, because the colors on the caps don't, necessarily match the actual ink on the, inside so having a swatch and just, having a reference card helps to make, sure that the color you're picking is, really the color you're trying to pick, basically, i am really impressed by the color, coloring but in another breath who needs, these many greens, who needs these many blues who need, these many pinks and purples, for one piece you definitely don't need, these many colors, a lot of them are very similar so if, you're thinking about buying a set like, this i think it's absolutely not, necessary but shout out to who for, sending me these it's a nice wide, variety but, low key unnecessary, so i'm nearing the end i still have some, blank spaces and at this point, it's a mission to try to find one random, color, i'm trying to go through line by line, it's giving where's waldo trying to read, the name off of the card and trying to, find one particular color it is long, so here are all the swatch cards i, managed to find all of the swatches on, these two cards i'm actually quite, surprised about the variety of grays, we've got but i'm nothing like the earth, tones i'm surprised at the number of, rounds we've got as well actually on, these two bro i'm missing three of the, swatches and at this point i can't die, looking for these markers, i tried in it the markers also have this, new design with this you know cut out, which i think is pretty cute comparing, it to the older ones this is the brush, tip marker and this is another chisel, tip but here is what each marker looks, like, chisel tip on one side and the lip nip, on the other and now it is coloring time, so i'm thinking if i use the yellows, on the right side of her face and i can, go from like lighter to darker then on, the transition we want to use orange and, then from orange i want to go to like, the purples this is a bit of like a, harsh lighting, and then we'll have some like i know, it's looking a mess, i would say trust me but i don't even, know if i trust me let's be real and, then we can have like the sharp reds, and this, corner and then the hair, i'm going to pick a slightly lighter, yellow, can have like the highlights of yellow, coming on this side, and then we can pick some of the earth, tone to blend out the hair but the idea, is the hair is meant to be quite dark so, it will build up to, a really dark color i think on this side, i want to bring in some of the, highlights so we'll have some blues, greens so the hair will still be this, dark color you just have, like the highlights and the glows from, these other colors and the point is to, use different variations and different, shades of these colors to hopefully, blend into each other i don't want to, use color and pencils for this piece, because it is like a marker, challenge, i can bring in some purples, i don't know i don't know it's looking a, mess and then what i had in my mind was, yellow to red to pink going down here, and then blue to purple maybe green to, blue to purple going here and so i cover, the entire rainbow so i'm just gonna, quickly mark, where the main colors will go oh my gosh, where the gray's gonna go in her clothes, in her clothes but the thing is it can't, just be great it needs to be like super, colorful as well some of it will have to, go in her hair, oh my gosh this is gonna be so difficult, um yeah i don't even have the energy to, look at the swatches if i'm gonna be, real just got too much to do i don't, know how we're gonna use all of those, grays for the leaves i could start with, like lighter greens up here, and then go to like midtone greens in, the middle, where i'm coloring this is so higgy and, haggard so keep greens on this side but, more earthy greens, on this side since we got to opie tones, okay so the great thing about this, tester page is that i can play around, with things and decide what i want to, move forward with so i haven't colored, in the background yet maybe the gray can, be the background since there'll be so, much color i think that's actually a, great idea so i'll start with the, background and then see how i'm feeling, for the skin so what i'm going to do so, that you know and believe i am using, every single color is that i've got this, completely in frame so you can see me, actually going through so i really want, to work through a whole section and then, move on so i'll put them in here and, then put them back before i continue, i'm going to use this little key on the, bottom left to tick off when i've done a, whole section, [Music], i'm starting with the yellows and kind, of easing into the oranges and hopefully, in the end it'll form a nice blend, but from that tester page you can, already see that i have an idea of what, i want but i don't have a clear, direction everything is still kind of up, in the air, if you watched my daiso dollar store, video i was explaining about how i kind, of had art block recently and i think, doing challenges like this really helps, because firstly i'm doing it in a, coloring book so, i don't have to worry about making a, super accurate sketch or a nice, illustration, but also having the challenge of using, every single marker color has really, expanded what the outcome can look like, but also that kind of restriction just, really brings out creativity so i'm, excited to try this even if i'm very, nervous, i don't really think it'll get this deep, i need a second pot, a midway check-in, i'm quite surprised that i basically, used all of the yellows and oranges from, here and i've not covered that much so, all of a sudden this challenge feels, doable, [Music], continuing on to the reds and the pinks, i'm not really trying to be accurate by, what exactly each flower is i don't know, my flowers anyway, so if something is meant to be blue, enough coloring in pink i'm sorry in it, but for the most part i'm trying to use, one or two colors for the base and then, adding in detail with so much the deeper, tones for each color, i also tried to change up the camera, view so you're not just looking at the, same thing top down but best believe i'm, still doing the same thing of taking the, marker from the left and then putting it, in the cups on the right when i'm done, with it, so i am nearly done with the first, section the yellows oranges to red and, pinks i really like how this is turned, out actually i think i'm missing some, oranges and reds so i'd like to move on, to the next section so i'm gonna put, these back and the ones i didn't use, from this section i'm gonna keep them, here, i think i'll need them more for the, neutral bit so they can stay here, okay, so time to move on to the reds and, purples, in each color section i'm really trying, to get a wide range of values so i've, got some, darker reds and i'm adding some darker, purples but i'm also trying to get some, light values as well because, if you look at the marker set i've got a, lot of pastely kind of colours as well, like the really light pinks and the, lilacs, so this will be a good place to add that, [Music], and i think next to this section i'll, probably do the neutrals so i'm also, trying to edge into some of the more, mauve colors so this feels like a good, place for these colors, i've got these purples remaining and i, think they'll be good and used with, these later so i'm gonna add them to, this section and i'm gonna move on to, this section, [Music], and now it's time for the greens, so green is not one of my favorite, colors in life i don't know why i just, i'm not a big fan however sometimes i, see the vision there's some shades of, green that i'm like oh okay i hear that, but for this piece i'm not really trying, to do green flowers really because green, is going to be used all over the piece, for the leaves, and like i said on the tester page i can, go from like lighter greens at the top, and then going deeper as i go down the, page, and i could also do more of the you know, khaki and the foresty kind of greens is, that the right word i don't know but i, can do more of those with the neutral, flower colors so i'm not really trying, to do green flowers in this step i just, want to have some sort of a link between, the yellow on the top right and then the, blues in the top left, at this point i still have loads of, blues to go so i'm going to use some of, these extra colors just to add some, shading add some details really expand, the values for each of the flowers, [Music], the blues are more or less done i've, left spaces for the leaves that i'll, come back to and the final thing i want, to do is i want the bottom left section, to be neutrals, so i want to do this palish faded kind, of purple and maybe use that as a buffer, to get to the neutral section, yeah i'm not really sure about that, though, okay so i am done with all of my blues, and purples and i'm really really liking, it i'm gonna leave the greens till last, to go around where i've got all the, colors so i'm just going to bring these, that i haven't used out and i will put, them on this side, and then i'm going to put these that i, have used back in place, i think i'm now going gonna do the, browns, this is probably the riskiest part of, this whole coloring process actually, coloring the girl is gonna be a mess, with the colorful idea i have but i have, so many neutrals i've got this entire, top left section of neutrals and i had, to google some different color flowers i, found some brown flowers that are quite, nice so i'm thinking of doing the big, focal point flower there in brown, and then using some of the other browns, to add some details, it's obviously a bit of a risk because, brown flowers to me gives the flowers, are dead, like you barely kept it alive, but it also could turn out so nice so, without reference this is kind of hard, but i'm just trying to use the different, colors to add some detail and to add, some blending and i'm not going to lie, to you i am liking how this is looking, [Music], and now i've managed to use most of the, neutrals i'm quite shocked, but the remaining browns i'm just using, it we've got some small small flowers in, the bottom left, and i'm just using it to just quickly, one or two lines each because, i can't see where else it can go to be, honest, [Music], so, done with the browns and i actually love, how this big brown flower tender now the, last section i have not touched is this, gray section everything else has been, used can you believe it okay so i'm, going to return the earth tone skin, tones whatever back to this section, then i'm going to do the greens, this is probably the easiest part of, this entire video because there's so, many leaves on the page there's so many, different shades of green i can use one, for the base and i can use another one, to add some detail to add shading add, dots the different flowers almost demand, for a different shade of green in the, first place as well, [Music], so this is quite an exciting stage and i, actually think it just helps to tie the, entire piece together now it's becoming, one piece it's looking quite cohesive, and i am loving this floral background, okay so greens are done and i actually, love how this is looking so this is the, last section of barely tied i'm going to, put them out here so that i remember, that i still need to use them and turn, the rest of it to a trifle spot, the next day a girl is tired it has to, get done today so, i've got my grey markers these are the, ones i haven't touched yet i'm going to, use those but before i work on the, background i'm going to work on the, colorful face that we practiced over, here that was a bit of a haggard mess, we're going to try that again but, hopefully be a bit nicer let's go, i'm so surprised that we've used nearly, every color in this final set the only, colors we haven't used there are those, grays that you see out in the parts, and it's crazy because when i thought, about doing this challenge in the first, place i just fought on an a4 piece tell, me are you crazy, and lo and behold we've been able to use, every single color and it's not even, just one swipe once i've been coloring, actual flowers and actual shapes with, each and every single color i'm just, happy that we're near the end and now, for the face this is definitely the most, nerve-wracking part, i was initially considering only using, all of the colors on the background and, then making her look quite natural but i, just thought the point of this challenge, is for me to challenge myself, so this is the perfect kind of piece to, try a dynamic lighting and there's a big, risk that it just wouldn't turn out nice, but honestly and i say this in every, single coloring page this is just a fun, video if it turns out higginha good okay, we'll learn from it and next time it'll, be even better so i started with the, fiery right side so the yellows and the, oranges, and then i've gone into the cooler, warmer colors i'm not really sure how to, combine it in the middle of her face but, i'm definitely liking how it's turning, out and i'm using some of the, fluorescent colors in this set, and i think it just makes her look so, vibrant and it pops greatly, [Music], next for her hair i'm just going to, apply what i want the highlight colors, to be, so i've started with yellow to orange, and red on the right side and then blue, to green and maybe purples on the left, side this is where i'm completely going, in blind, because, i actually have no idea how this will, turn out i'm kind of just following the, flow of the hair and hoping for the best, now i'm adding in some browns and i, actually want her hair color, to be very dark the purpose of all of, these light colors is just because i, have to worry about how i'm applying the, markers because i'm not going to use, color and pencils over the top bright, highlight colors need to show through, after i do the dark colors i really hope, that makes sense so i'm working slowly, down to the darker colors, and now it's looking colorful some may, say chaotic but i say dynamic, and so i'm finally reaching out for some, of these grays that i haven't used for, the piece yet just to try to mute the, colors a little bit, still adding some of the actual colors, because i want to keep the colors there, but now i can slightly go darker and, darker with the hair, [Music], i am loving how this is looking i think, the hint of color in the hair is exactly, what i was going for, just gonna finish off our lady and the, skin, and then we can move on to the, background just gonna quickly washi tape, [Music], picking this background color wasn't, easy and i ended up cutting this out but, i tried a few different grays on the, actual peas and i wanted something that, was light enough so that it wasn't, distracting but i actually wish i went, darker for the background, but it is what it is i'm not too mad at, this medium gray that i settled on, and now the background is done the final, thing i need to do to complete this, challenge is to finish the grazed art in, these pots, so my idea behind this is just to use it, for some shadowing and some blending in, the hair but also for some detail in, some of these flowers, so some of these grays should form nice, subtle changes in tone which can really, help so if you have a smaller set and, you have a couple of grays, adding gray to your color can just help, to make a slightly darker version of, that color, and oh my gosh the pot is finally empty, the final thing in here is a colorless, blender there's not much i can do with, this so i don't think it really counts, but we are done okay the final thing i, need to do for the actual piece is for, the top i was initially just going to, use the grays to keep it kind of neutral, but i think it needs to be somewhat, colorful so i'm just going to add hints, of color and then we can call it a day, using every single marking the largest, set challenge accepted and completed i, added some more details and shading off, camera but here is what the completed, piece is looking like i love that i, really challenged myself with this one, to make her colorful and all dynamic and, all of that and i really like how it, turned out let me know what we should, name her down in the comments and i'm, sure you'll love my other coloring book, videos next

Has anyone had the experience of your Host listings being turned off by AirBnB due to bringing to their attention problems with their platform and procedures?
John Cohen, NYC HostYes

AirBnB recently hid all my listings. At the same time they cancelled over 19 bookings adding up to over $7000 dollars most likely more. Here is a copy of the email sent to those inconvenienced persons.

Dear xxxx,
We were just informed by John Cohen that your accommodation starting on xxx, April xx, 2012 (reservation xxxxxxx) is no longer available. You should know that hosts are penalized for canceling reservations and removed from our site if they do so frequently.

I am no longer able to access my account to see my future payouts -- approximately $2000 dollars -- or when I will recieve $954.

At the suggestion of an experienced attorney I have backed all information that was in my account including changes that were occurring after AirBnB shut off my listings.

I cannot prove what the customer service supervisor said over the phone but I will quote 'We have discussed it among ourselves', 'There are simply too many customer service requests from your account', 'You can apply in two months to be re-instated.'

After careful review of the backups it appears to be 21 bookings not 17. As of this date several guests are living in my home. Booked through airBnB. I have no idea if I will be paid for their stay. Here is a short list of my Complaints that resulted in AirBnb hiding my listings.

1) Peer review process as implemented is being used by a few guests as a threat of a 'Bad review' if I do not bend to demands for services not offered. Or if I attempt to enforce the House rules such as under age drinking or cleanig up after themselves.( Threse guests have no reviews of their own.)

2) Security Hole. Apparently airBnB does not maintain any information of the Guest of the guest.

3) CSR who answer the phones are given extraordinary power to rush to a judgement without giving the Host the benefit of the doubt.

4) Reservvation panel is a Mess if you are a busy Host. Dificult to make heads or tales from this. Even the CSR.

5) Bad reviews which are not opinion but statements of Fact. Say about the cleanliness of a Host. 'Place smells like Garbage' Bathroom's are dirty' by a guest who frequently broke house rules.

6) A clear and convincing connection between Guests who them selves have no reviews making a complaint or bad review on a Host who has asked them courteously to obey House rules.

7) Repeatedly blocking out up to 10 days or more on a room until an investigation is complete. Finding the Host acted properly

8) Many of my customer service calls were about parts of the WebSite not working or learning how to nagivate it properly. I have bad eye sight and need new glasses. EG recently a part of the listings page failed to show up where
prominently it states Host has PETS. Two guests allergic to Cats appeared.

. Though my listing clearly states CATS. I had to have my House keeper Vacume 2,000 square feet. So that the guests could finish their bookings. My cats were trapped in my bedroom for two weeks.

9) Security deposit is not a security deposit. Never in my Life have I been
compelled to negotiate with a petty thief

Their is a lot more. 24/7 is not 24/7 due to the lack of enouph Human Infrastructure to handle the Volume of calls. Resulting in knee jerk reaction's
and bad decision making.

I cannot help get the feeling that AirBnb in my opinion would like low end Hosts to quietly fade and disappear in to the night.

This one will not.

The average star rating of my spare bed rooms was 4.5 Stars.

Skirting around the Franchise laws of the State of New York and the Federal Franchise Laws.

Skirting around the case law in New York State concerning Defamation and Slander.

And who knows what else. (SPIONS)

I am a fundamentaly good New Yorker. I am confident that my fellow New Yorkers will hear my cry for HELP.

I have been crippled financially by AirBnB's actions. Humiliated. Down but not out. I have nothing to loose. I am old sickly.

I stayed here because I didn't want to
spend a fortune in a hotel, so I booked at John's place. My room was
pretty cozy, clean and had air conditioner (which was really helpful
on those cold nights). The living room/kitchen/dinning room was ok,
and I liked the fact that there were other guests living there as
well and I met a lot of interesting people. I would recommend your
stay here if you want to save money, socialize with other cultures
and know how to clean after yourself (important part). It is up to
you if you want a clean room. The walls are really thin and sometimes
you can hear everything from the room next to yours, but overall, it
is good place for low price.

Lauren
Don't expect luxury & do not come
here if you're allergic to cats as John has 2 (very cute) or if you
don't know how to clean up after yourself (you will get told!). This
place is secure and very affordable for those on a budget, the
beds/toilets/towels are clean and John offers coffee every morning.
All in all, if you can forego any frills and live in a hostel
environment, this is a good deal. If not, try the Waldorf Astoria.

Viola
The place is just two blocks from the
subway stop and it really takes 10 minutes to get to Manhattan so is
ideal if you don't want to waste your day travelling. I have found
quite a friendly bunch of people living in John's loft and John
himself is a very helpful person. I would suggest to guests who have
never seen NYC to ask him tips on what's worth seeing in the City.
The constant presence of coffee in the place was, also, very much
appreciate!!! My overall experience was pretty positive and I would
recommend it.

Peter
John was a very nice host. The room is
great value for money. Expect no luxury, 'this isn't the
Waldorf-Astoria', as John would say. But it's a room, more or
less private, allthough you can hear everything that's going on in
the livingroom. But if you're in NYC for a few days, it's a great,
cheap spot. The room I rented had some temperture-issues, the heater
was a bit hard to control, and made some loud noises sometimes, but
John told me this in advance. He was helpful all the way.

Kyle
It was a nice private room! John was
very helpful in getting me acclimated to New York City, and he even
made me a nice BLT sandwich right when I arrived!

David
Relacin calidad precio muy buena.
Barrio'aburrido' pero el piso est muy bien conectado
(parada de metro cerca). Spermercado cerca. Lo recomiendo
positivamente para pasar ah unas vacaciones. John personalmente me
libre. No s que hubiese pasado si no hubiera habido alguna
habitacin libre. En definitiva es un buen sitio para pasar tus
vacaciones en NY a muy buen precio.

Johannes
Best bang for the buck. Don't expect
luxury and don't be too picky, but there's everything you need and
it's a private room at a great rate. Quite uncomplicated, I could do
some short notice extension as I decided to stay one night longer,
and then even one more.

Iveta
I've recently stayed at the shared room
for 5 nights. It was a great experience, I can recommend this rental.
John is a great host, he is going out of his way to accommodate
everybody's requests. He is friendly and he is a great cook too! I am
planning to be back in New York at the end of April and I will stay
at this place again. I think that says a lot! it is a great place for
a great price.

New
Johns place is as described, a huge
and quiet loft that he built. Not luxury but its a good way to save
money if youre going to expend the whole day exploring the city.
Its close to the subway station wiht direct line to manhattan (A
and C line). John makes coffee every morning for the guests and he
cleans the bathrooms every morning as well.

Veronika
Great way to save money on a trip to
NYC. Bring your own blankets because it gets very cold at night and
there are none for you to use. The area is safe enough but it gets
very deserted at night. Coffee in the mornings was great. Don't
expect any privacy or luxury staying here but it is a cheap way to
see NYC. FYI, smoking is allowed indoors and there are two cats.
Average age of other guests is 22-25.

Camille
Another host nearby could not host me.
He sent me to John's place. As a young 18 year old french woman
traveling alone I am careful. The accommodations were incredible for
just $10. per day. $11. with the AirBnB fee. It is a medium size
room. Very bright. Sun drenched as the host John says. Though it has
4 twin beds on 2 wooden bunks and one twin it is not cluster phobic.
It is meant as a budget shared room to sleep in. The vanity was nice.
Storage that I locked with a padlock. The rest of the Loft is large.
Balcony's, gigantic rear deck and a giant private roof with nice
views including Manhattan. I had the room all by myself. But met
several interesting Europeans from Germany and Italy renting the
private rooms. The common area is large. Nice kitchen dining area.
Unusual. The large refrigerator is in the same room as the shower.
John is an artist. The shower room is large. The host was very
helpful. He showed me how to use the MTA Trip planner to efficiently
travel to my activities in Manhattan. John has to be the best Host on
AirBnB and possibly all of NYC ! Twice he made me a delicious meal !
3-4 Minute walk to Subway. A metro. 20 minutes 34 street Manhattan
off peak ! I am glad the other host cancelled. $10. nightly. safe,
clean convenient, food. #1 host and place to stay in NYC. Oh it is
$10. for thirty day stay. The price is more expensive for 3 days or a
week but still cheapest in NYC ! Thank you John. 5 stars. He deserves
10 stars !

Guido
John is a very good host... the loft is
in a good neighborhood just short walk from a supermarket and utica
subway station... and just 20 minutes far from Manhattan with public
transprtation!!! Sure i would be back there next time i'm going to
NYC! and if you are a good traveler who really wants to discover the
real life of the place you are visiting sure you'll enjoy this place.
Very safe, good wi fi connection, clean and easy! see you next time
John!

Patrick
This accomodation is by far the best
value for a short-stay room in New York that I have seen. The cost
for my own room per night actually worked out even cheaper than a
hostel where a person would share a full dormitory of 6-8 people.
This place was great value - and I had my own room. The host was very
helpful. My first experience of his helpfulness was when I noticed
that my computer cable had broken. When I asked him if he knew where
I could get a replacement in the city, he actually went out of his
way to fix the cable for me! He saved me a number of bucks doing
this, and also saved me the time it would have taken to locate the
replacement. Big thanks to him for that. And that was just the first
day. The host has coffee on the stove every morning. It is also
likely he will cook something for you a few times during your stay.
It could be a roast, or it could be a big breakfast sandwich that
will keep you going for a number of hours. The crowd that I came
across in the place was mostly young and vibrant and interesting. It
is a good place for you to meet up with like-minded adventurers in
the city of New York. The host has a large amount of very practical
local knowledge. He has a large willingness to share very useful
knowledge with you. This was invaluable for me because, as a
soon-to-be qualified attorney, I was in town to find out the
possibilities of locating a long-term apartment lease and a job in
the city. The host went out of his way to share his valuable
knowledge with me about these things. The host is worth listening to
carefully. The quality of the place was very satisfactory. If you are
a complainer or nit-picker, or have impossibly high standards, don't
waste anybody's time and get a 150 buck a night hotel instead.
However, if you want something with great value and have realistic
expectations of what great value is, then you will really benefit
from staying in a place like this. Even though I give a 4-star rating
(which is very good), I actually give the extra 5th star in the
rating when I factor in the price and all the extras. Again, have
realistic expectations for a place in this price range, and
appreciate good value when you see it, despite being a little rough
around the edges. Furthermore, as time goes on, the host continually
makes improvements to the place and has a genuine commitment to
creating accomodation that adds value to the people who stay there. I
expect the place will only become better and better in the future.

Matthew
5 stars! I had a great stay with John
in his loft apartment. His description of the living space is very
accurate. My room was clean and spacious, the loft was quiet through
the night (had no disruptions from flatmates in other rooms), the
bathrooms were clean and John even cooked 2 meals for me during my
stay (quite the chef I might add)! For the price range and location,
this listing can't be beat!

Stephanie
John is a welcoming friendly host.
Staying at his place in a private room beats staying at a hostel
sharing with 3-11 other unknowns. Also he makes sure he only rents to
non-sketchy people, which can only be a good thing. It's close to
Manhattan, the neighbourhood doesn't look safe but is actually
really ok and I doubt you can get a better deal than this. Peace out!

J. B.
John is a gracious and welcoming host.
The property is as described, and the bed is very comfortable. The
place (as stated) is rough-hewn, but clean, quiet., and comfortable.
The A train express is just two blocks away, so this is very
convenient to Manhattan.

Stephanie
We transferred to another room because
it was cheaper. But it's not that small - still a good size AND it's
private after all. John offered us some dinner one day which was
pretty darn good. He does keep things clean around here (but a lot of
it depends on other guests here too) so he's a good host.

Bettina
John's Place is very close to the train
station and in a safe area. I never felt insecure during the whole
stay. The rooms are in a loft and have all the advantages of a loft:
the common room, that everybody can use, is big and there are several
very big patios which is great for summer. You are welcome to use the
big kitchen and because John is a great cook, you should accept his
weekly invitation for a meal. John also knows a lot about New York
and has a lot of material and information to share. He answered my
E-mails amazingly fast and helped us a lot to find the way from the
airport to his place. On the other side, you should be aware, that
the walls in the loft are very thin and you can hear everything.
During the night it sometimes became very cold in the rooms, because
the rooms are very high and the heat accumulated under the ceiling.
There is just one shared shower for all. Altogether it's a nice place
to stay. But if you want to stay in New York for several weeks, you
should first test this place for some days and then decide if this is
the right place for you. Best wishes, Bettina

Isabella
The place is really nice and clean and
super close to the subway. My room had a beautiful view and a comfy
bed. John can be a little intense, on the first night he was quite
annoyed with me for catching a cab as he said cab drivers were
'crooks' but after that he was very helpful and pleasant.
Even gave me some delicious roast he made and let me hang out past
check out time. All in all it was a good experience.

Stephanie
Really nice spacious room which I
shared with my cousin and we had ample space for all our stuff. The
location is pretty near to the station, about five minutes walk away.
John is a really helpful host and made sure we had a place to stay on
New Year's night when he found out that we didn't have anywhere to go
for that night. And honestly I don't think you'll find a better deal
for the price you pay, especially if you're travelling alone in NYC
:)

Yoojin
I couldn't agree more with Nacio's
exact review. Close distance from subway station and warm rooms are
good. However, if you are sensitive to cigarette smoke, I don't
recommend this place. He smokes inside the house and rooms for guests
have a big glassless hole facing kitchen where he usually smoke.
Considering the cheap price of room, you may bear some shortcomings..
but I don't think it's comfortable to live for a long time in this
house.

Ling Sum
Great stay, great location! John is a
perfect host. The room is big enough. The neighborhood is safe!

Adam
Hey travelers! I stayed at john's space
in crown heights, Brooklyn for 10 days & would recommend it to
any of you out there on a budget who don't need many frills. It feels
like a cross between a hostel & a friend's place - there were
long term & short term guests here - everyone was respectful &
quiet. Excellent value for money & steps away from 24 hour
transit anywhere in NYC. The shower needs improvement but it's a
great place to hang yer hat. Would/will stay here again. Thanks John,
Merry holiday everyone!!! Adam

Cristina
I wouldn't choose Jonn's in matter of
the size of the room. But it was comfortable and the practical
facilities all right. Besides the room there is a ' shared space'
where it is possible to spend time/ do activities if the space of the
room isnt 'satisfying' which works fine. The bed was fine.
Transport to Manhattan is easy.

Carmen
If you are considering a hostel, this
would be a much better choice. The rooms are private; there is a
fridge, basic cooking facilities and John makes coffee every morning.
John gives fair warning about the neighborhood and I certainly
wouldn't walk around late at night, but it is very near the train,
the grocery store and laundromat are walking distance and the
neighborhood folk are generally friendly. It is definitely worth the
price.

Giorgio
Nice room, close to subway station and
to everything, few minutes to Manhattan. Mattresses, sheetes and
pillows where new when we arrived. John is funny and very helpful, he
gave us a lot of advices.

Nirmal
Good place overall. Pros: own room with
lock and key, on A express line, cheap Cons: My clothes smelled like
smoke, cats kept me up 3 nights, the fridge is in the bathroom for
some reason. the area is a little ghetto but overall safe since very
close to the main road. John and everyone in the house is friendly
and keep the place clean, though i bought my own cleaning wipes and
cleaned the toilets few times. I expected that since the place has 9
rooms and just 2 toilets and 1 bathroom. john was very gracious and
offered dinner on more than 2 occasions. for $29 a night it was a
bargain.

Isabell
It's a good place to stay for a few
weeks if you need an affordable homebase while you're exploring the
city The subway is just a short walk away, it takes about 20 minutes
to get to the west side of downtown Manhattan, which for New York is
very okay. John is a helpful host, often offering his guests food and
good advice or tips on where to go and how to get there. There is a
large common area with a kitchen that holds everything you need; the
bathrooms and shower are also shared by all. Rooms have loft beds,
drawers, chairs, tables, lamps - in short, everything you need. If
anything's missing, just ask; John is quite good at providing
anything extra (for example the extension cord and socket adapter I
needed to get comfortable in bed with my laptop). If you have any
more questions, just ask, I'll be happy to help you out.

Adam
I stayed at Johns place for just over a
week. The location of the place is great, only a short walk to the
train station and ~10 min to lower Manhattan. There was also on the
street parking easily available. John was a great host, provided me
information on how to get around and also recommended some places to
check out. Its great value for money, would stay here again if I'm in
NYC. Room was sun drenched and clean. He offered coffee every
morning. The complimentary BLT he made for me was delicious. If
anyone has any questions just send me an email.

Elena
Gracias John!

Rhona
Very helpful when we had a last minute
emergency, my daughter was in New York without internet and I was in
Scotland and I had to find her somewhere quickly. He replied
immediately and made up the room for her. She says it was great to
have a private room and room to open a case and hang up clothes. Easy
to come and go as you get your own key and it's close to everything
you need especially the subway. She says she felt safe in the house
and the neighbourhood, even as a solo female. Complimentary coffee
was also nice as was the BLT he made one day.

,JackTheDonkey.com. A Socially Responsible Social NetworkHi there,
My name is David Katz and I have recently launched a social network called JackTheDonkey.com. JackTheDonkey.com is the community where your time online supports the charity of your choice. Or what some call, a socially responsible social network.
Jack donates more than half of all ad revenue generated by an individual's time online to their choice of more than 20 charities from across Canada and the US, and now the UK to the tune of 1.1 cents every impression (paid at par depending where the charity is registered...or at least that is the theory...the advertisers to date have been friends and family so I have been covering the 1.1 cents myself).
The number of impressions and how you create them is up to you. Simply sharing, viewing or commenting on pictures or 'deep thoughts' makes cents!
Jack also takes a 'softsell' approach to keeping the charities top of mind among existing supporters, while trickling into the consciousness of potential supporters, as the charities' Twitter feeds have recently been incorporated into their supporters' personal profile pages...viewable to the community.
Yes, the name will always sound a little untraditional, but JackTheDonkey.com is working to connect with individuals who are traditionally unengaged from anything remotely related to volunteerism and fundraising.
There is another key component to the site that we are rolling out in the near future which will provide an additional stream of funds for the charities on jackthedonkey.com.
Please join us: http://www.jackthedonkey.com/Register1.html (and remember to check your spam folder for the activation email).
Attached is a copy of my first piece of press that I was able to generate locally earlier this summer:
http://null/redirect?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Ecjnews%2Ecom%2Fimages%2Fstories%2FHeebonics%2FJune_25_09%2Epdf&urlhash=PfME&_t=disc_detail_link
Attached are also links to a couple reviews of Jack that were posted recently on a couple startup related sites:
http://null/redirect?url=http%3A%2F%2Fstartupmeme%2Ecom%2Fjackthedonkey-jacks-every-visit-of-yours-to-support-your-favorite-charity%2F&urlhash=yJkm&_t=disc_detail_link
http://null/redirect?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Ekillerstartups%2Ecom%2FSocial-Networking%2Fjackthedonkey-com-support-a-charity-the-social-way&urlhash=p3FU&_t=disc_detail_link
www.JackTheDonkey.com is free for the charities and members of the community, but not for the corporate sponsors/advertisers. ,Gaming HN for an Orange Name - A WarningMy name, at the time of posting, is orange. It's kind of nice to be recognized for being upvoted on average, even if I don't make a huge number of comments and will never be on the leaderboard.

However, it just feels wrong. I've been unconsciously working on getting a high average for a while, and this will only encourage my unproductive behavior. I sometimes refrain from posting when I know my comment won’t be read or won’t be upvoted.

In the spirit of pointing out the full effects of this change, I will now offer a simple list of guidelines so that you too can get your name in orange and feel like a real man/woman/entrepreneur.

As for me, I’m with tptacek—opt me out of a colored name.

1. Only post in threads that are on the front page or look sure to get on the front page. If no one will see your comment, no one will upvote you.

2. Don’t post on a front page post that already has more than a full page of text. Your comment will appear at the bottom and no one will scroll all the way down there. You’re just yelling into the void.

3. When possible, reply to a highly rated comment that doesn’t already have replies. Particularly focus on getting your comment to appear 'above the fold' when it is posted. This will ensure that your comment is read and enjoyed.

4. Don't post against the prevailing mood of a post. If the mood of that article is pro-libertarian, beware critiquing that philosophy! On the other hand, when the population is more balanced in that individual thread, feel free. In general someone who agrees is more likely to upvote than someone who disagrees, so you should get be ahead on balance.

5. As soon as you make a comment, upvote the article and all of the parents to your comment. This will put your article closer to the public eye. If you want to truly join the dark side, vote down the other comments on the thread or other replies. I’ve never done this, but it’s an option.

6. Say something interesting. Without this, you’ve got nothing!

7. If you’re trying to be funny or sarcastic, make it incredibly obvious. If it’s not incredibly obvious what you’re trying to say, don’t bother posting.

8. Don't get involved in a long discussion! This will only end with a bunch of 1 point posts that drag your average down.

Let me say in closing that HN is one of the best discussions on the net and I’ve been privileged to be here with you all. pg, thanks for all the work you put in.

Still, we should be realistic about the behavior that we are promoting. Goodnight and good luck!.
