hey Internet guys gals artists colorist, Hellboy enthusiasts whoever is watching, my name is Mike I am an author and a, fledgling comic book colors, I'm working on my first to create, creator-owned projects and I hope to, bring you pages from those and hopefully, a different perspective there's great, information on YouTube about comic book, coloring and I'm going to try and do, something a little different to show you, some different tools tools outside of, your normal lassoing and grab and, grabbing and classic digital painting, I'm just gonna shine and and give you a, little bit different perspective and, today I'd like to start with the work of, Dave Stewart which is very unusual for, his work on Hellboy and Hellboy is one, of my favorite comics because the, stories are so old they seem his oldest, stories you know he'll boys always, falling into the great below the unknown, to face either his greatest fear or as, father or whatever they're just very, archetypal, interesting legend based stories and, with with a freshman it's like that, famous quote that every story has been, told but not every story has been told, in every way and that's why I got into, movie not comic book coloring but, into drawing and I just I've already, been drawing a few months so the drawing, that we had today is something I did on, New Year's with a king sized sharpie and, a pencil so it is not expertly done and, I am by no means of drawing expert and I, am actively trying to get better every, day because I have a story that I want, to tell and it's going to be better with, pictures and with words and I already, have all this other digital knowledge so, I figure maybe one day I too can make a, comic book that's my goal or a graphic, novel or whatever you want to call it if, it's got adult themes so what are we, looking at we're looking at a scan that, I've darkened up and I redrew some of, the lines and let's get in here so you, can see what the drawing looks like it's, got some problems if you look you can, already start to see the artifacting, from the pencils this was just a pencil, drawing and then I the we did all the, white areas and made all the other areas, blacks there's little holes in here it's, imperfect I know but we're trying to do, an approximation of a Mike Mignola, drawing and for those purposes I think, it does that so that we can color it, what I should have done an area so that, I redrew like I read you these teeth if, you see this, rush is very very smooth in fact I think, it's called smooth anchor and instead of, drawing with that what I should have, done is move the mode to dissolve here I, realize that just before I started, making this video and then you get it, effect very similar to that and you can, if you turn down the opacity to maybe, 70% you can get these you can get edges, that look you know similar to that, that's what I could have done I don't, know how useful this will be to you but, drawing and dissolve mode with an anchor, could be useful at some point so we have, this drawing on top of it we have a, color hold which is just where it, colored the inks in this area to to, approximate the original now this is the, cover of the fury issue too and if you, haven't read that darkhorse released a, moving comic which to me just looks like, the liquify tool and the transform tool, where you make a movie frame by frame, which sounds really painstaking I don't, know if that's how they do it that's, what it looks like we go look type in, the storm in the fury Hellboy moving, comic into the search bar YouTube and it, should come up and there's six of them, and it's one of my favorite Hellboy, stories I believe it's the second to, last one before they start the Hellboy, in hell line but, it's I love it I love it I love it and, it's the moving picture thing is really, cool a good idea but could you imagine, like liquefying a little bit of this, dragon a little bit at a time and moving, it around so that it, it looked like not like a movie I don't, know you got to watch it it's very, interesting it's kind of bizarre too and, then we have this finished color that I, did and this is, we're going to go for it today we're, going to kind of approximate Dave, Stewart's work which goes overlooked on, hell why not in the industry and I know, it wins eisenerz and everyone everyone, loves them and he does all kinds of cool, stuff but his work on Hellboy I feel, like it's so perfect that it's almost, invisible and that should be the goal of, any colorist to really serve the artwork, especially when you have great artwork, like Mike Mignola and not this weird, small-headed, odd position tell boy that I've done, here shouldn't I got downloads like a, big version of a cover a high-resolution, and I looked at it in the caulk I should, at like why am i could have redone this, so much better but at that point I, trained left the station, I'd already colored it so if we look in, here I want you to pay attention over, here to the I'm going to use the, eyedropper and pick out some colors and, you can see where it's darker up here, and then we kind of get more saturated, in here and a little bit lighter but, are, new colors like everywhere this is a, very, we're super zoomed in right now and this, is I don't know for its 600 dpi or three, nor DPI but it's enough that you're not, going to see much I mean the only reason, that this is jagged is that there's a, these are pencils so what is going on, now, like you like I think that I'm, competence Photoshop and then if you, start doing a video like that's when it, is just you won't be able to draw on a, layer for some reason what is going on, so we're going to approximate this, effect now in the originals, it looks like Dave Stewart treats his, whole thing like canvas and that he, takes a very very small brush and goes, in there and like a brush like well here, I have a brush like I think that he uses, this would be painstaking we're going to, do a quick version a fast version of, this textured of how to get all these, blended colors that textured something, you can use because in reality if you, want to do this properly it seems like, he uses a brush similar to this okay a, small heavy brush where his flow and, opacity and size are all controlled by, pen pressure and so you can you can get, all these overlaid colors and you can, get in there and you can kind of, scribble in all these different you know, every shade of everything right, depending on the pen on the pen pressure, that's probably what he does I don't, know I don't know Dave Stewart I don't, know I don't have any first-hand, knowledge I'm thinking that he doesn't, block it in real lazy like this because, it's just so nuanced when you look at, the original work and I I would highly, suggest you get Hellboy in some sort of, digital high-resolution digital format, it looks so good on a tablet or on your, computer and I'm I guess I was kind of a, purist at first it was like I want the, physical book and I usually buy trade, paperback something like that and and I, gave it a chance I gave in digital, comics a chance comiXology or whatever, and I really liked the setting where you, where you get to go panel by panel, because the artist gets to dictate that, all right you get to look at this then, you look at this and there's the implied, contract between the reader and the and, the comic book creator that your eyes, are going to go top to bottom left to, right right we all know how to read a, comic book but I have to be just like, reading any other book but if there's, some you know violent scene or fire, explosion at the bottom your eye is, going to kind of naturally drift there, you can interrupt the flow so I love, Digital comics that have the setting to, go panel by panel and then it moves you, into the text you get to see you get to, it get to it tells your eyes it doesn't, guide your eyes sort of shows you it, only shows you what you're supposed to, be looking at and I really enjoy that, about digital comics but in terms of the, color work of Dave Stewart it's the only, way to really see it in all of its glory, because the, I mean every color is expressing about, the glossy new graphic not you know the, bound graphic novel versions it's not, like it's not poor resolution but it, would be even better if it were at a, higher resolution to see the nuance and, I'm not saying it looks exactly like, what we have here but it's similar so, let's talk about how we get this effect, I'm going to go I'm going to go to this, flats layer, and it it's I'm going to turn this color, hold off so it's a little easier on our, eyes now I've chose to use these flats, because when you're doing this very, nuanced approach you know I'm going to, jump back down to this color layer, because we need to talk about the colors, that are in here all of these colors are, virtually the same I mean we can tell it, and it's not money everything is clearly, defined and a lot of that is the quality, of the artwork but if I ask you what, color this was you easily tell me that's, a very saturated orange color I can find, that any very saturated color your I, find is easy and this you would say you, might say yellow you might say orange, it's kind of in between right really it, seems to it's living much more in the, orange but it's but it's very light it's, how it's hard to tell you can tell that, this is a hyper saturated orange and, this is an orange in this is an orange, but what color is this would you believe, me if I told you the hue of this look at, I'd just tapped out here and look where, that is it's super light and this are, virtually the same, do you see this as orange because it is, a very very orange color the orange and, black right, the same thing is going to be darker, wings are a little bit darker darker up, here these are all orange colors now, Hellboy is pushing towards red but he's, not red we think of him as red but he's, - he's he's all over the place, he's teeth everywhere from really orange, to really red depending on the light or, whatever we could see that this is a, very red color and this is you know it's, rendered so but it's subtle though I'm, sure that at a low enough resolution, they almost look like flats right this, is about the size that you would be, viewing a comic book and they look like, flats but when you dig in there I mean, they're not it's not flat at all you, know there's a ton more saturation in, here even though there's basically the, same color and it does a very, interesting thing and to your eyes it's, just it's in effect that I mean I don't, know that I would use this effect very, often it requires a of a certain kind of, artwork and it doesn't have to be, Mignola style artwork it just it's not, something that you so subtle you, wouldn't use it for everything right but, now that we've looked colors let's look, at how to get the effect and we're not, going to do a big area because even even, when you're doing it fast it takes time, I'm going to turn that layer off I'll, leave that hold off still and let's, we're going to select this area here, which is the background this this teal, color and we're going to copy it to a, new layer control J and then we'll lock, the transparent pixels so now we have, this layer that only we can color on, can't color out of a lot outside the, light and we're going to grab color here, now this is what that heavy brush we, would need a very small and we'd have to, be you know we'd have to be scrubbing in, here for a very long time to get the the, intended effects and I'm sure it takes a, while mr. Stewart I'm referring to to do, that so what I've done is I have a bunch, of cloud brushes, and I'm going to take one here this is, the one I found that works the best you, probably want to mix if you really want, to do this right but I'm just going to, do it with this one brush and it's super, randomized and pen pressure changes the, opacity and the flow which is something, that you're going to want and and this, brush can get it can get very good, effects you size it up and down and, maybe go to white and kind of kind of, mix it in there and see if it's a cloud, brush right you've probably got 20 of, them well have you ever tried to paint, with it you know because that that is, where I found this to be very valuable, so I'm just going to block this in here, we'll go down to like maybe right here, okay and just bear with me here you're, going to think that this is kind of, crazy and will kind of get smaller as we, go I know, this looks nuts feel like this could, never end up the flat thing but because, I just would never work if you were, using like traditionally separated, values values that were further apart in, terms of color but because we're living, really really close together this is, going to this is going to blend in a way, that doesn't seem offensive at least, that's the hope, scribble all this in and this is going, to we're going to need to spend more, time on it than I am, you can't just set that's not going to, be good enough right we're going to need, to do some some detailing because this, thing is, so randomized it is hard to control and, you may have to undo and redo and in my, case I'm just going to paint over and, and repaint over until I get a nice step, defect because you kind of want it mean, if you look at it the work at Hellboy, looks a lot like like the world's, weirdest lassoing you know there's the, colors are kind of laid on top of one, another and but there are little areas, or will like you know little pockets of, dark and pockets of light they don't, necessarily it is rendering but it, doesn't look like it's it's rendering in, a non-traditional sort of form so now, let's just see now if we click around, see we're not we don't really have a ton, of different colors we have some so we, need to keep need to just keep building, and I guess we'll just do this area up, here and now it's going to start to kind, of pull from what's already here once, you get enough I'm taking colors from, the outside of it and bring them in, you, see once you as you block down what you, should do is you should start sizing, down your brush and then we can zoom in, just a little bit start working these, these colors in these shapes and just, getting them where we want I think it, needs to be a little bit more saturated, towards the middle here but we have, enough saturated bunch here I mean it's, all very saturated but I need even more, a little bit of this slightly lighter, saturated that's kind of how the, original looks there these it's a bit, darker towards the top the top edges and, because we're not using a very we need, to size the brush down something like, this to get the right his his shapes are, very very edged and etched and with a, with a small brush or at least a brush, with a with a bullet you know this brush, has pretty soft edges you wouldn't you, would need a brush with a this is a lot, more texture in the edges to approximate, his effect and look this doesn't look, anything like clouds right even though, it's a cloud brush I just and while I, know that this isn't nearly as good as, you know the actual the actual work on, the comic it's just a very interesting, it's an interesting approximation and I, think that it could be useful to someone, somewhere hopefully obvious blue pixels, out of here this area is is the most, saturated in the image right around, these edges and it's a it's almost flat, you know when you click on in here it, shouldn't move too much and then up here, it should move every time you click and, it does we look at it even if there was, a few few outliers in there on how they, got there that need to be snuffed out, but anyways that's how I how I, approximated and created the final image, which is this here you can you can see, let me turn that color hold back on so, it looks right you can see do they, almost look like thumbprint like smudges, and it's clouded but it's not cloudy if, that makes any sense and there are these, I see I got I got the brush down to a, small size a somewhat small size but, still we need to be much much smaller if, we really wanted to approximate the, effect but ya know some books out on, Hellboy, is a lot of, different shades and different views, this is super dark right here and zoomed, in like this you can tell that there's a, lot going on but think about it this is, you know to cover it this big you can't, this stuff is more it just makes it's, this organic thing that you feel and, that you don't you don't necessarily see, and you can see the darkness up here and, on the wing and then that's about it and, it's just it's very bizarre to me how, orange this drawing is without looking, completely orange so that, is going to be it for this little little, tutorial on how to fake Hellboy effects, right I hope you've enjoyed it please, let me know if there are any businesses, my 1st video production quality is going, to improve greatly but I'd like to know, if, issues if there are cracks or pops or if, there are any problems with the video, quality I have it turned all the way up, for my screen capture software so, hopefully it does a good job capturing, and please ask questions if I did, something that you're not quite sure how, I did it I'd be happy to explain it or, if you want me to approximate some other, file I'm planning on doing the know if, it's a guy or a girl, Marta Gracia did a video or two did a, cover of Dante it's the inhuman the 2013, Inhumans issue 2 on the lives of me and, issue 2 but the warmer Dante's got got, his hand like in a really gnarly, position and it's joe mad pencils that, he painted over or it might be anxious, like no black in the whole image but i, love that image and so I drew it while I, was watching the playoffs last weekend, so I need to ink that and then and I, don't know how to ink I don't know how, to draw I'm in it so well please there's, no no reason to insult my drawing I, understand that I've only been doing a, few months I'm bad I'm very bad or more, so internet take it easy on me if you, can, if not I'm a big boy I can take it but, yeah maybe I'll do that or if you have, another suggestion I'd be more than, happy to do a poor sketch and then color, less poor underneath it oh thank you for, watching and I look forward to bringing, more content and you guys helping me get, better and hopefully I do the same for, you okay pick

Launch HN: GoLinks (YC W19) – Internal short links for teamsHello HN!

We’re Jorge, Kevin and Sean and we’re building GoLinks (https://www.golinks.io).

GoLinks is a platform that allows you to easily manage and share links by letting teams create a short link for any internal URL within a company. These links are easy to remember and share, so you don't have to bookmark or copy and paste them in emails.

Each day we use and share hundreds of links to get our jobs done, without considering how long it takes to access and share these resources. It’s one reason why many of us leave tabs open in our browser: we don’t want to spend the 5 to 10 steps to navigate back to that important page. With GoLinks, you’ll be able to deep-link directly into any application with just a simple keyword entered into your address bar. This allows links to be conversational. For example, one employee can create the keyword “go/review” to point to the annual review page in Workday. Later in a meeting, that employee can mention, “Remember to visit go/review to fill out your annual reviews!” Now anyone in that meeting can remember and access the link “go/review”, without digging through their email or Slack.

Golink systems are commonly used in many big tech companies such as Google, Linkedin, Twitter and Airbnb, built by internal tools engineers in those companies. These systems have become an integral part of the way tech companies share internal links.

When we started our careers in tech, we would often visit each other for lunch at these tech companies and we began to notice the same go/links everywhere. In the hallways, cafes, break rooms, posters. fliers and TVs, there would be these keywords prefixed with “go/” that allowed employees to quickly access information on their devices. The employee could enter a shortened URL like go/food into their mobile browser, or desktop, and could access the lunch menu for that day. An easy and simple concept, but an extremely powerful method for internal communication.

Although these systems are ubiquitous in large tech companies, we noticed there was nothing on the market that catered to startups, midsize, or non-tech companies. Companies usually don’t have the time or the resources to build sophisticated internal tools, so we set out to create GoLinks as a Service.

The challenge was building an internal tool for companies that may not have any internal infrastructure. For example, large tech companies have infrastructure so when you connect to the company Wifi or access the VPN, you can access the internal company network. This allows users to access the “go” domain on the network, which resolves the deep link redirection. For smaller and midsize companies, employees might be 100% remote or working in a coworking space, or maybe the company never got around to setting up an intranet. We had to build a product that did not rely on assuming internal infrastructure.

We were able to replicate the functionality of an internal network, and the simplicity of a short-link redirect system, by creating browser extensions for each of the popular browsers. The extension would proxy the “go” domain to our server and we authenticate and redirect the user to the correct location. Now coworkers can be on any network and any wifi, and as long as they authenticate in their current browser, we can find their company’s internal links.

We are startup-friendly—anyone under 10 users can get started completely free—but our main initial focus is on enterprise clients.

If you’ve ever used our GoLinks or any company's golink system, let us know how it’s changed your daily workflow. Thanks for reading. We appreciate your ideas and feedback!.
,Stripe updates pricing on cross-border fees between UK and EUI just got an email from Stripe:

---

Hello,

We’re writing to let you know that we’re making some changes to cross-border fees in Europe and the UK starting 1st July 2022.

Based on your Stripe transaction history, this change won’t impact [Company], and all other pricing will remain the same. You can review the most up to date fees for international transactions on our pricing page.

You can contact us, and find more details about this pricing update, managing or closing your account, or any other next steps, on our dedicated support page.

- The Stripe team

---

Of course they don't actually mention what the changes are, but looking at the pricing page [0], it seems like there is now an additional 1.1% (making it 2.5% in total) for EU companies taking UK payments and for UK companies taking EU payments.

I imagine this is related to Visa and Mastercard price increases post-Brexit? [1]

,Moo.com shuts down Flavors.me (acquired 2012)Hello,

With regret, we’ve made the decision to close down Flavors.me.

Due to a change in strategic direction, we've decided to move resources to focus on other digital projects and MOO's core heartland - helping businesses of all sizes look their best with beautiful printed products.

We fully appreciate how frustrating this is and hope you understand that we’ve deliberated over this decision for many months. Recent issues with Flavors have forced us to look very carefully at the service we provide and we no longer feel we can offer a robust service into the future.

We’ve already disabled new sign-ups and in the coming months we will begin to retire parts of the service. Due to this, we will be closing all free subscriber accounts on 31st March 2017. You are more than welcome to continue using Flavors until this date, but we’d encourage you to start looking for an alternative solution.

Below are a couple of suggested tools for building an online presence, from companies that we know and trust will provide a solid platform and a good customer experience.

I've had workaround using a VPN in the USA, but that's really slowing my work down and obviously this doesn't work for everyone..
,Ask HN: What tools do you use to switch between projects?Hello HN,

I was wondering if anyone has any tools / software they use to switch between projects? I constantly find myself going between a variety of programs and associated setup to get started working on any particular avenue. For example, I'll need to be in design mode and have illustrator, fireworks, a number of webpages, and client requests open... and from there I'll need to switch over to web dev which requires closing those and opening a few terminal screens, a text editor, associated web pages, etc...

After this cycle happens a bit, I start to go nuts. Does anyone have any scripts or processes they use to control this??

Thanks!.
,Show HN: Dock.ninja host GitHub projects for short duration for demo purposesHello All, this is my first submission to HackerNews. It took me a lot of convincing myself before posting this entry here.

http://dock.ninja is a proof-of-concept application, to host git projects without project page for a short duration.

The intention is to save time:
1. instead of cloning a repo locally and hosting it just to know the workings
2. create a gist page and maintaining it

One sample entry:
https://github.com/lukehaas/css-loaders.git

As i am learning python & django, i tried developing this application as POC. It would be really helpful to get your reviews and feedback on this application..

My best Hellboy drawing so far. Coloring him was lots of fun, and my Crayola markers worked out really well for him

A drawing of Hellboy I did a couple years ago. I actually colored him using Crayola markers, but I think I was able to make them look just as good as Copics

{Artwork} Finally finished working on the coloring of this mask-less Spider-Gwen. It's about 98% pencils, with 2% of it in gel pen. It's a page from Marvel's WOMEN OF POWER coloring book, w/original art by Emanuela Lupacchino from Spider-Gwen Vol 2 #6 (Cover B Variant).

This took SO many hours and it isn't even technically the first page... Maybe I should have picked something easier for my first time trying adult coloring, but I've always been ambitious.

2 year evolution of Hellboy drawings. Each colored with Crayola markers. Wanted to share to maybe inspire others to just keep practicing. Your materials, mediums, budget, none of that matters. You can still make great art with cheap stuff, it just takes some practice and experimenting
