hi this is Alisha McDaniel from art for, the creative soul comm and Alicia, McDaniel fine art comm and I'm here with, a fun video in which I share techniques, on how I create coloring page art this, sheet is from my coloring book entitled, sophisticated ladies in hats, coloring book and these are the type of, techniques that I use to facilitate, coloring book parties, so today I'm going to use a coloring, sheet that I removed from the book, watercolor pencils a paintbrush and, quarter cup an 8 inch by 10 inch sheet, of colorful scrapbook paper glue paper, gemstones and stickers and a towel for, my brush so the first thing that I'm, going to do is pull out some of the, brown watercolor pencils for my set and, test them around the edge of the paper, to figure out which colors I want to use, to color in the skintone, I am going to cut the face out from the, surrounding background so this is a, great place for me to test those colors, out once I choose the colors that I want, to use for the skintone I'm going to go, ahead and start coloring in the face, using really short strokes so I'll start, with one color brown and as you will see, throughout the video as I move towards, various area such as under the neck or, around the side of the nose or under the, hat I'll use a darker Brown to create, shadows this helps me to create the look, of three dimensionality so I'm just, using very short quick strokes to color, in the face the neck and the chest once, I finish coloring those areas I'm going, to color in the other details such as, the eyes and the lips and then the Hat, [Music], you, [Music], [Music], [Music], you, [Music], [Music], now that I've finished coloring in each, area of the face and the Hat with, watercolor pencils I'm going to now, brush over each area with a dampened, brush so I'm wetting my brush and some, clean water and just now painting over, each area that I've colored this is, going to help smooth out some of those, coloring strokes that I started with and, it's going to also help that brown or, any other area that I've colored look, deeper I really enjoy using watercolor, pencils because you can layer them you, can mix them together and I like that, you can use them dry or wet so I'm just, going to take my time now and paint over, each area of the face I'm making sure, that my brush is not too wet which is, why I'm using this how the towel will, also help me keep the brush clean, [Music], [Music], [Music], [Music], [Music], you, [Music], [Music], [Music], [Music], once the illustration is dry I'm going, to cut it out and then glue it to a, pretty piece of scrapbook paper I've cut, the scrapbook paper down to an 8 inch by, 10 inch size so that I can fit it into a, frame because that's one of the fun, things that we like to do a colorful, parties we like to frame our final work, so I'm going to also go further and, embellish this piece by adding paper, gemstones I'm going to use a little bit, of glue to make sure that the gemstones, adhere to the surface properly and I'm, going to put them on the Hat on the, necklace and on the earring finally I'll, add an inspirational sticker to the top, of the piece, [Music], [Music], you, [Music], [Music], [Music], [Music], I really enjoy creating this coloring, page art today you can purchase this, book and many of my other coloring books, by visiting art for the creative solocom, or Alicia McDaniel fine art calm I hope, that you take your coloring pages to the, next level by turning them into art

Ask HN: First Client IssuesI am a hiding my name because this is my first client and I don't want people to go looking for my company (though that might be great advertising).

I've got a client that I know through multiple relationship maps (former co-worker of my wife and sibling of a friend of a friend) and while I was not a friend of the sibling, I was an acquaintance.

Client has a cousin doing her Graphical Design but the GD doesn't have any web experience. GD sent over three PDFs, one of all the products, one of the website, and one of the website specs. The website specs did not contain sizing information for the images or the pages, it contained font/spacing/coloring/page flow information.

I asked the GD for the sizing of the web page and was provided an answer. There was some functionality in the site design which I discussed with the client and removed (GD was inaccessible) based on an agreement.

I finished the site and client reviewed making a few changes. Did a second review and then sent the link to the GD for their review. GD commented on the proportions being off and the distortion of some images. I agreed that the dimensions were off, but that's what I was told to go with and if the measurements I have are not right, I need to know what they should be.

I reached out to the GD via phone and e-mail. Did not hear back until I received an e-mail from the client to both of us.

Basically the e-mail's tone was that of threatening if I couldn't finish the project client would find someone who could and that if the GD can't get me the information than the Client doens't know what I'll need. And yadda yadda yadda.

So the question is:
Do I suck it up and make the changes or do I just write this off as a learning experience?

My idea: to build a community of topical-hand-edited news pages. I want to start in the tech community working to recruit editors/experts to build pages covering programming languages and popular technologies. Think of it as an alternative to blogs, tweets, and social link sites. Here an expert can build out a page with the most useful links and highlight news items that he/she knows are important to the community. Everything is tabulated into one easy to scan page. This is all managed via a drop and drop interface.

We are still in beta and more features are coming. My eventual business plan is to place ads on the pages with an aggressive editor rev share program. ,Ask HN: Long landing page or multiple pages?I've noticed that some startups use very long landing pages that seem to describe every feature of their product. I look at those and think they should really be split up over multiple pages. I'm wondering if anybody has any insight as to why those are becoming more popular?

My speculation is that it is for SEO purposes and that somehow one page covering everything is better than more targeted pages covering individual features? I'm seen some guides that imply the latter is a better way to optimize which implies long landing pages are bucking the trend..

,Ask HN: Why can't Chrome understand difference in closing windows and crashes?I'm really angry. I've asked for this from Chrome developers multiple times: when my chrome windows - all of them - crash in private mode, I want to be able to reopen them, because I didn't close them.

I've just lost over 10 hours of reading that I had opened to work through. (Part of many reasons that I use private mode is that I don't like autocomplete and when I'm done reading about a subject I can simply remember it, I never need it to pop up when I start typing in the URL bar, etc etc. If I need something permanently, I save it.)

So since Chrome developers don't seem to be able to understand the difference, maybe I'm missing something. Does anyone know why they cannot differentiate a Crash from me closing private windows? The promise when you open such a tab is "Pages you view in incognito tabs won’t stick around in your browser’s history, cookie store, or search history after you’ve closed all of your incognito tabs" and not "... after you’ve closed all of your incognito tabs OR THE BROWSER CRASHES."

This is extremely frustrating. This was very important reading for me that I spent many hours collecting so that I could focus on it. I have tried add-ons and they don't work. I just want Chrome to meet its promise and have these tabs and windows open untiL I (not a crash) has closed all of them. They could at least make it an option.

I hope someone can clear up my thinking. I've just lost a devastating amount of my time. Now all I have is a paper checklist of the subjects, for me to again repeat my background research into. This doesn't seem a fair burden on the user, to have to use a pen and paper to do Chrome's developers' job for them: i.e. to let me read what I've opened and not close it and make it disappear without any way to get it back, and not at my request.

Do I really need to use pen and paper here? At least let me set this behavior as an option..
,Ask HN: Which social media app has the best design in your opinion?Which social media app do you think has the best design? This can include UX or UI design. Apparently most people don't pay attention to fonts, symbols and other stuff closely, but for those of us that do, which app speaks to you the most? This can really be any app, but preferably one of the more known social media apps.

For me, I've used Twitter probably the most by far, so I might be biased. They have a great black dark mode. The font is genuinely so cool. The high contrast labels and icons are so pleasing to look at. The profile pages are cool and overall, the app layout makes the most sense to me in terms of the replies and features. Apparently Twitter is one of the more confusing apps to use, but Reddit is insanely confusing to me. When you look at social media and the internet overall, Twitter and Bootstrap seem to have had the biggest influence on app and website design, so many apps have similar features that Twitter does.

My least favorite is probably Reddit and Snapchat. Snapchat is pretty smooth to use, but the colors and bubble-like design just doesn't do it for me, and the profiles and searching thing is very confusing. Reddit is just a horrifically slow app and replies to posts are insanely annoying to sift through. I find myself closing every first tier replies so I can read replies instead if replies to replies. It's a confusing mess and there's just about nothing on the app that makes sense to me, which is interesting considering Quora, Twitter and Reddit are essentially the same thing and apparently had some of the same people on their design teams.

There's plenty of more stuff I like about Twitter, but the main thing is that fact that I prefer Twitter's design in general over other apps.

Imagine you're going to build a new SaaS app. Would you think of building it on a headless CMS? Probably not. To devs, "content management system" is usually a swear word. If a team of engineers gets assigned a CMS project, it's less than thrilling. Engineers want to avoid roadblocks, write code, and build things they're proud of—but existing CMS's get in the way of that left and right with their third-party integrations, point-and-click schema designers, code generation, etc.

Rather, you'd build your backend on an app framework like Django, Laravel, etc., for good reasons: ownership over the backend, better access control, customizable auth patterns, etc. Typically, headless CMS are super limiting; you'll end up fighting the platform more than having it help. But, with app frameworks, you're often left to roll your own admin UI, and that takes time. Not to mention building CRUD UI gets old quick after you do it a few times.

That’s where a headless CMS could shine, because they instantly give you admin UI that non-technical teams can use to manage digital products. That saves a ton of UI dev time— but without an extensible API, headless CMS's are far too limiting. They're designed for marketing teams, which usually only need the generic basics: log in, create a draft, preview the draft, publish the content. Go back and update some pages. Define editor roles and localize content. If you need more than that, you'll soon be out of luck.

Payload is different because we treat developers as first-class citizens. We provide the best of both ends: a powerful and extensible API and a fully customizable admin UI out-of-the-box. All with a developer experience that we obsess over, because we want it ourselves.

Payload is code-first, which allows us to get a lot of things right. We give you what you need, then step back and let you build what you want in TypeScript. You'll understand how your CMS works because you will have written it exactly how you want it. Version control your schema and use your own Express server. Completely control the Admin panel by using your own React components. Swap out fields or even entire views with ease. Use your data however and wherever you need thanks to auto-generated, yet fully extensible REST, GraphQL, and Local Node APIs.

Since it uses your own Express server, you can open up your own endpoints alongside what Payload does. In fact, you can extend just about everything that Payload does. It's MIT and open-source, fully self-hosted, comes with GraphQL and REST APIs, and completely customizable.

We realized the need for Payload while we were building the corporate website for Klarna. The Klarna engineers we were working with were among the best in the world, and while they evaluated headless CMS options, they saw restrictions in how all of the normal contenders "black-box" away the API. They wanted to build their CMS, deploy it on their own infrastructure, and truly "own" their CMS. They fell back to using WordPress. When that happened, Klarna inadvertently shined a spotlight on the CMS market and pointed out a significant void in proper code-based, developer-first CMS. There was no one to give them the developer experience they needed. That's what got us started working on this.

It might seem like a CMS is just a wrapper around a database with a nice UI to show different field types—but in reality, it's a lot more complex than that. We obsessed for years around how to build a proper API that minimizes breaking changes, but still exposes a simple way to extend everything. When you start to introduce things like field-based access control, field-based conditional logic, localization, versions, drafts, and autosave, the task becomes a lot more daunting. Doing it right requires a significant development investment—especially if you want it to perform at scale in addition to removing roadblocks at dev time.

It seems like every day, a new headless CMS pops up. But when you filter down to those that are completely self-hosted, the options quickly dwindle. And then when you remove the confused point-and-click "no-code" (argh!) GUI nature of the existing options, the options narrow to one: Payload.

Our users have built quite a diverse set of apps on Payload. We've seen a virtual events platform, a broadcast platform, SaaS apps of all shapes and sizes, video games, and an Uber-like snow plow service! There are over 1,000 projects in production as of last week, and we can't wait to see more.

Open source has been incredibly helpful. We've gotten significant PRs and our community has gone above and beyond in their contributions. We did not anticipate the level of skill and involvement that we are seeing daily from our community.

Our business model is based on two things:

1. Enterprise features like SSO, audit logs, publication workflows, and translation workflows. Of course, as Payload is open-source, you can build these functions yourself, but enterprises are opting to pay for our official functionality and SLAs rather than rolling it themselves.

2. Cloud hosting. Now that Payload 1.0 is released and ready for production after more than two years of development and dogfooding, we've shifted focus to building a deployment platform for Payload that will deliver permanent file storage, database, API layer, and CI. It will be the easiest way to deploy Payload, but not mandatory to use—much like the NextJS and Vercel model.

,Gaming HN for an Orange Name - A WarningMy name, at the time of posting, is orange. It's kind of nice to be recognized for being upvoted on average, even if I don't make a huge number of comments and will never be on the leaderboard.

However, it just feels wrong. I've been unconsciously working on getting a high average for a while, and this will only encourage my unproductive behavior. I sometimes refrain from posting when I know my comment won’t be read or won’t be upvoted.

In the spirit of pointing out the full effects of this change, I will now offer a simple list of guidelines so that you too can get your name in orange and feel like a real man/woman/entrepreneur.

As for me, I’m with tptacek—opt me out of a colored name.

1. Only post in threads that are on the front page or look sure to get on the front page. If no one will see your comment, no one will upvote you.

2. Don’t post on a front page post that already has more than a full page of text. Your comment will appear at the bottom and no one will scroll all the way down there. You’re just yelling into the void.

3. When possible, reply to a highly rated comment that doesn’t already have replies. Particularly focus on getting your comment to appear 'above the fold' when it is posted. This will ensure that your comment is read and enjoyed.

4. Don't post against the prevailing mood of a post. If the mood of that article is pro-libertarian, beware critiquing that philosophy! On the other hand, when the population is more balanced in that individual thread, feel free. In general someone who agrees is more likely to upvote than someone who disagrees, so you should get be ahead on balance.

5. As soon as you make a comment, upvote the article and all of the parents to your comment. This will put your article closer to the public eye. If you want to truly join the dark side, vote down the other comments on the thread or other replies. I’ve never done this, but it’s an option.

6. Say something interesting. Without this, you’ve got nothing!

7. If you’re trying to be funny or sarcastic, make it incredibly obvious. If it’s not incredibly obvious what you’re trying to say, don’t bother posting.

8. Don't get involved in a long discussion! This will only end with a bunch of 1 point posts that drag your average down.

,Ask HN: Why is Disney+ UX so bad?A few weeks ago I bought a one month Disney+ subscription to check it out. I have all kinds of problems when using their web player compared to Netflix and YouTube:

- subtitle settings get reset every time I close the website.

- the button for changing subtitles is in the upper right corner. Once you open the menu the button for closing it appears in the upper left corner. You can't close the menu by clicking outside of it, despite the fact that you can still see the blurred video in the background.

- pressing space doesn't pause the video, but repeats the last action you did. If you closed the subtitle menu by pressing esc, pressing space will open it again. If you entered the full screen mode, pressing space will close it.

- there is no way (afaik) to open a list of all episodes from within the player. You have to go back to the show's main page, choose the season (because it always defaults to season 1) and scroll a horizontal list (which always defaults to the first episode) using a button that appears only once you hover it. Scrolling with a mouse scroll/touchpad doesn't work.

- it is impossible to search for movies using a director's name. For example, I know that Disney+ has a lot of Charlie Kaufman's and Wes Anderson's movies available - they are my favorite directors - but I couldn't quickly check which specific movies there are.

I know that it's possible that I have higher standards of UX because I'm a programmer, but I doubt that Disney+'s interface is intuitive to anyone..

I know a lot of articles and discussions have appeared on the art of reading on HN. But I had had this issue for a while now, and was hoping someone out there could help me out.

So for starters, I started to learn Haskell late last year from the Real World Haskell book. Being a new-comer to functional programming its taken me almost a month to read and digest 150 pages or so. Smack in the middle of January I landed a new assignment that involved a host of new (Java) technologies, so I had to drop Haskell for a while to catch up on those. I then had to review a book for a author friend.

This has been a regular cycle. I start something with great enthusiasm, I am thoroughly enjoying myself, only to have hit a situation where I need to drop it to learn something else. I have half a dozen of so books covering management, finance, self-help on my shelf right now, and I see no way of catching up.

I am sure several others out there have the same predicament. I don't have a problem learning, rather I would learn something new everyday. Its just commitments that keep getting in the way.

So the question is how do you manage your learning process? How do you find time to read, learn, digest all the varied interests that catch your eye (be it new languages, frameworks, technologies, other areas of interest, hobbies what-have-you).

Any suggestions will be welcome..

I know there's an upcoming NoSQL East conference in Atlanta at end of October, we had started planning and announcing this several months ago. Unfortunately, tracking down space and getting everything organized took a bit more time. We have finally nailed down a larger space to hold this in, and hope that despite the short notice some of you HNers would care to join us.

The idea here is a short meetup and learning; it's not always easy to duck out of work for a tech conference so we hope a few hours out of your evening will leave you feeling enlightened.

Speakers will be covering CouchDB, MongoDB (and a panel with representatives of both projects comparing and contrasting the at-the-surface-similar systems), AllegroGraph RDF Store and using Clojure with Hadoop.

,Ask HN: have Google search results worsened?It seem like over the last 6 months to a year the quality of google search results has gone down significantly.

It's not really subtle either. I'm coming across outright broken links on the first page of results fairly regularly. Other times, the quality of the linked site is so bad that I can't even view the content (e.g. popups that obscure the entire view of the page that I have no way of closing, broken javascript that doesn't let me view the content, or forced subscriptions that prevent me from viewing the content).

Sometimes it's a little more subjective, but it's things like ranking spam, ad-riddled sites over official documentation when googling for exact API terms.

Has anyone else noticed this?.
,Ask HN: Are there tools to schedule tasks to execute at specific times?'cron' and 'at' seem like too much of a (bad) hack for anything more than a couple thousand tasks that need to be scheduled. I am writing a web app that has to close auctions and send out emails, transfer money/tokens around, etc.

The PHP programmers tell me to just do a lazy check on each page load for auctions that are closed- if I do that, I'd probably throw it on to an SQS queue and have some server instance processing the closing auctions in bulk. But what if it's a cold day in hell and nobody is triggering these page loads? etc.

What other solutions are out there for time-sensitive scheduling for arbitrarily large numbers of tasks?.
,Tell HN: A private library in SF that could double as a hackerspaceIf you think coffee shops are too loud and coworking spaces are too expensive, you might appreciate this hack. I discovered it by accident while search for 'wood paneling' on Yelp. :-)

The Mechanic's Institute, near the corner of Post and Market, is a non-profit private library and chess club, and membership only costs $100 per year. That's considerably better than the $300 a month charged by the least expensive coworking spaces! It's also, in my humble opinion, a much more beautiful workspace. The building has tall ceilings and windows, large columns, wood-paneled study rooms, plush leather chairs, and large desks with power outlets. The wifi is also fast and reliable.
